What to Expect
When you arrive at Ole Arts, you are welcome to enjoy Hors D’Oeuvres and beverages prior to the formal program beginning. The event will open with brief remarks, followed by ample time for networking conversations with alumni who are eager to explore careers in the arts with you. Our formal start time will depend on the end time of the concert.
The space will be broken out in eight broad networking areas: Arts Management, Visual Arts, Theater, Music, Dance, Education, Literary Arts, and Therapies. We know many of you identify with more than one area – that’s fine! Similarly, many careers in the arts overlap with more than one area. Everyone is invited to mingle throughout the space to explore all of the networking groups.
Many faculty and staff will be around to help you connect with people and to chat with you as well.
How to Prepare
You may wish to attend the Ole Arts Prep Session tomorrow, Thursday, April 19, 2018, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Viking Theater. In this brief and informal session you will hear about the day’s events and have an opportunity to ask questions.
Be prepared to have conversations. Building connections and developing professional relationships are very important to discovering and getting the opportunities you want throughout your career. Ole Arts is an excellent place to practice these skills in a safe and encouraging environment. Alumni are coming just to talk with you! Think in advance about the questions you have about a career in the arts.
Sample Questions:
What careers are there for me in my area of interest?
How do I get started in the area I’m interested in?
What is your job like?
What was your first internship? Your first job?
What do you like about what you do? What do you least like?
What advice would you have for me?
What is life like as a performer? An artist? An educator?
The arts intersect in many ways – so be curious, flexible, and open to all conversations. You never know who has great advice, an opportunity, or a connection that could be valuable for you. If you expect to find the “exact right person for you”, you may be closed off to the wonderful opportunities that can arise from happenstance.
