New job titles are being created every day that are very specific to different fields. Start looking at occupational areas in very broad terms and begin the process of narrowing in on something more specific.<\/p>\n

Come in to the Piper Center<\/strong>\u00a0and browse the shelves of books under \u201cExploring Careers and Majors.\u201d There are books within interest areas such as education, music, the sciences, etc. that describe \u201cCareers in \u2026\u201d Or \u201cJobs in \u2026\u201d (a particular interest area).<\/p>\n

Visit the\u00a0VAULT<\/a>\u00a0online career library<\/strong>. Browse the list of career profiles. Also, scroll down to \u201cA Day in the Life\u201d under Career Advice Articles and browse that list.<\/p>\n

Search on LinkedIn to see exactly what areas St. Olaf alumni are working in<\/strong>\u00a0(If you don\u2019t have a LinkedIn profile,\u00a0consider getting one<\/a><\/strong>):<\/p>\n

  1. On\u00a0LinkedIn<\/a><\/strong>, hover\u00a0over over \u201cContacts\u201d and click on St. Olaf College \u2013 This will bring you to a page where you can do some interesting career searches<\/li>\n
  2. Click on some majors under the \u201cWhat they studied\u201d heading to see what areas the alumni now work in (click on the arrow to the right).<\/li>\n
  3. Pay close attention to how the \u201cWhat they do\u201d and \u201cWhere they work\u201d sections are affected (click \u201csee more\u201d for more comprehensive lists).<\/li>\n
  4. Click on a specific location under the \u201cWhere they live\u201d heading to narrow your search geographically.<\/li>\n
  5. Pay close attention to the alumni LinkedIn profiles listed at the bottom of the page \u2013 They change with each search.<\/li>\n
  6. Broaden your search by altering the graduation dates on your search.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Attend Piper Center\u00a0networking events<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to hear alums talk about what they do and have the opportunity to ask them questions.<\/p>\n

    Try doing a search on the\u00a0Online Alumni Directory<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to see some occupations you may not know about. Log in by creating a my.stolaf account or use existing account and choose to do a search. Try doing a simple search by occupational area, and from the list of alums that results, click on them one at a time and view what they are currently doing. Or try a second search by setting occupation back to \u201cNot Selected\u201d and choose any major to get a different list of alums and their occupations.<\/p>\n

    Talk to professors<\/strong>\u00a0about what career options are available in certain interest areas.<\/p>\n
