Be aware of time zones.<\/p>\n<h3>Be careful with the word networking<\/h3>\n<p>Unless you are attending an event specifically for networking, <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/networking-guide\/why-are-people-often-uncomfortable-with-the-word-networking\/\">refer to what you are doing as making connections<\/a>, building relationships, and seeking advice.<\/p>\n<h3>Know your purpose<\/h3>\n<p>Do your homework so that you don\u2019t ask questions that you could have answered through basic research. <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/informational-interviews\/\">Review the section on informational interviews<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Listen carefully<\/h3>\n<p>When a person offers advice, listen attentively. Do not monopolize the conversation, and do not rush through it.<\/p>\n<h3>Keep the conversation positive<\/h3>\n<p>If you come across as negative and gossipy, or as someone who criticizes others, that impression with stick. You never know whom you person might know.<\/p>\n<h3>Ask for help in small doses<\/h3>\n<p>Ask more questions than favors. Do not burden the person with initial requests for additional contacts or job advice.<\/p>\n<h3>Get permission<\/h3>\n<p>Before using anyone\u2019s name to approach a referral, make sure that you have permission to do so. Honor requests for confidentiality.<\/p>\n<h3>Follow up<\/h3>\n<p>If you are given referrals to additional people, <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/interview-guide\/follow-up\/\">follow up right away<\/a>!
