{"id":19639,"date":"2017-09-28T11:13:50","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T16:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/?page_id=19639"},"modified":"2024-07-29T11:41:25","modified_gmt":"2024-07-29T16:41:25","slug":"interview-over-skype","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/interview-guide\/interview-over-skype\/","title":{"rendered":"Interview over Skype"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>Organizations conduct interviews over Skype and other forms of videoconferencing to screen candidates in order<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to narrow the pool of applicants who will be invited to interview in person and<\/li>\n<li>to minimize expenses for both the organization and the applicant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many steps for interviewing by videoconference are the same as those for <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/interview-guide\/interview-in-person\/\">interviewing in person<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/interview-guide\/interview-by-phone\/\">by phone<\/a>. Start by reviewing those steps. Then consider these additional tips:<\/p>\n<h3>Preparing to use the videoconferencing platform<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that you have a Skype address (or address for another videoconferencing platform)<\/li>\n<li>Share that address with the organization<\/li>\n<li>Test to make sure that you can log in to the appropriate platform<\/li>\n<li>Ask the organization for a backup phone number so that, if you run into difficulties, you can communicate by phone<\/li>\n<li>Have a landline or your cell phone with you in case you need to place a call<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Preparing the room<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow the steps for <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/interview-guide\/interview-by-phone\/#preparing\">preparing for a phone interview<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Choose a backdrop that will not be distracting \u2014 preferably a wall in a solid color<\/li>\n<li>Test your computer equipment in advance with a friend or advisor to make sure that everything is working properly. Nothing is more frustrating to an interviewer than being unable to connect<\/li>\n<li>Test the volume on the microphone<\/li>\n<li>Test the height of the chair and the angle on the camera so that your face is properly centered<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that, when you look at the camera, you are looking directly at the interviewer(s).
