{"id":19662,"date":"2017-09-28T11:53:04","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T16:53:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/?page_id=19662"},"modified":"2024-07-29T11:41:25","modified_gmt":"2024-07-29T16:41:25","slug":"behavioral-questions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/interview-guide\/questions\/behavioral-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"What are behavioral questions?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><h3>Behavioral questions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Help the interviewer understand how you reacted in an actual situation.<\/li>\n<li>Require you to respond with a specific example<\/li>\n<li>Are based on the concept that future behavior is best predicted by past behavior<\/li>\n<li>Are asked with a specific purpose in mind<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Example<\/h6>\n<p>The question, \u201c<em>Describe a situation when you had a conflict with a colleague and how you handled that conflict<\/em>,\u201d is evaluating your interpersonal\/communication skills.<\/p>\n<p>Behavioral questions are likely to begin with phrases like<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Give me an example of a time when you\u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Describe a situation where you\u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Typical questions, and the behaviors they address, include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Communication:<\/strong>\u00a0we\u2019ve all had occasions when we misinterpreted something that someone told us, like a due date or complicated instructions. \u00a0Give me an example of when this happened to you, why it happened, and how you rectified the situation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conflict management:<\/strong> describe a disagreement with a supervisor, how it evolved, and how you resolved it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Decision-making:<\/strong> give me an example of a situation in which you made up your mind too rapidly, and how that affected the outcome of the situation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Judgment or ethics:<\/strong> everyone has to bend or break the rules sometimes. Describe an example when you broke the rules, why you did, and what came of it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Planning\/organization:<\/strong> describe a situation where you assumed responsibility for getting something fairly complicated or important done and how you went about it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Persistence:<\/strong> describe a time when you encountered an obstacle that you could not overcome and how you handled the situation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teamwork:<\/strong> describe an experience when you were part of a team, the part you played on the team, and how you handled team members who were not contributing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transferable skills:<\/strong> describe your strengths (usually 3) and specific ways that you have utilized them.
