{"id":19671,"date":"2017-09-28T11:58:09","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T16:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/?page_id=19671"},"modified":"2024-07-29T11:41:25","modified_gmt":"2024-07-29T16:41:25","slug":"thank-you-notes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/interview-guide\/thank-you-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"Thank you notes: Why do you need to send a thank you note?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>Sending a thank you note may make the difference between getting \u2014 <strong>or not getting<\/strong> \u2014 an offer of employment or admission to a program.<\/p>\n<p>Many candidates forget to send thank you notes. \u00a0Interviewers remember candidates who send thank you notes, especially handwritten notes.<\/p>\n<h3>Thank you notes<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Express appreciation for the interviewer\u2019s time and interest in you<\/li>\n<li>Personalize the experience by including a specific anecdote from the interview<\/li>\n<li>Reinforce your enthusiasm for the position and the organization<\/li>\n<li>Remind the organization of the benefits you will bring (one sentence! \u00a0Don\u2019t overdo it!)<\/li>\n<li>Include information requested by the employer (proposed start date, expense report)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Steps to follow<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Send a thank you note to each person with whom you interviewed<\/li>\n<li>Use a proper greeting, salutation, and paragraph structure<\/li>\n<li>Proofread the note many times<\/li>\n<li>Ask a second person to review the note for spelling or other errors<\/li>\n<li>Send your note as soon as possible but no later than 48 hours after the interview<\/li>\n<li>Send a handwritten note to make the most impact<br \/>\n\u2014 You can send a typed note or an email, but it will be less effective<br \/>\n\u2014 You may send an email if the opportunity is far away \u2014 i.e., overseas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"cta\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/interview-guide\/follow-up\/\">Follow up: your interview is over.
