(The most commonly accepted attachment is a PDF.)<\/li>\n<li>if the instructions don\u2019t specify, attach your resume and cover letter to the email. PDFs or Word documents are preferred<\/li>\n<li>if you are unsure, <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/connect-with-us\/\">check with the Piper Center<\/a>\u00a0or contact the organization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Printing your cover letter<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>hand sign your cover letter<\/li>\n<li>use a laser printer<\/li>\n<li>use 20 lb bond paper (standard printer paper)<\/li>\n<li>choose a basic color (white, off-white, cream, beige, or gray)<\/li>\n<li>print your resume and any other documents using the same kind of paper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scanning your cover letter<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>hand sign your cover letter<\/li>\n<li>use white paper<\/li>\n<li>use black ink<\/li>\n<li>make sure that you haven\u2019t folded the paper, spilled on it, or marked it in any way<\/li>\n<li>send the scanned document to your email as a PDF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Sending your cover letter by email<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>use an appropriate subject line. If the application doesn\u2019t tell you what to put in the subject line, use a simple and appropriate phrase like \u201cExperienced Art History Grad for Exhibitions Manager\u201d<\/li>\n<li>keep the body of your email short, unless the instructions say otherwise. Type no more than 1 or 2 short paragraphs<\/li>\n<li>introduce yourself and state that your resume and cover letter are attached<\/li>\n<li>include a greeting and a closing (followed by your name) within your email<\/li>\n<li>spell check! Proofread!<\/li>\n<li>send a test version of the email (including attachments) to yourself first. Make sure that the email text looks normal and that the attachments open.
