The process includes analyzing past and current experiences and accomplishments to help give you a sense of direction. While no assessment can perfectly describe who you are or what your career should be, they are valuable in helping you to consider options that you may not have previously considered.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Guided Self-Assessments<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Piper Center offers two guided assessments at no charge to alumni.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myers-Briggs Type Indicator\u00ae (MBTI\u00ae) Assessment<\/strong> \u2014 The MBTI is a personality type inventory that promotes awareness of the self and others. It is a widely-used, nonjudgmental tool that can help you gain an understanding of four natural preferences in how people gain energy, gather information, make decisions, and approach life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strong Interest Inventory\u00ae<\/strong> \u2014 By giving you insight into your interests, preferences, and personal styles, the Strong can enable you to identify specific courses, jobs, internships, and activities that you\u2019re likely to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>If you feel that these assessments would be beneficial to your process of discernment, please contact Jenele Grassle at grassl1@stolaf.com.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Self-Directed Assessments<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lynda.com\/\">Lynda.com<\/a> \u2014 Tutorials on Lynda.com can help you discover what you\u2019re best at doing and how you can leverage these strengths and abilities in your professional life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onetcenter.org\/IPSF.html?p=3\">O*Net Interest Profiler Short Form<\/a> \u2014 This instrument is a web-based, self-assessment career exploration tool that can help you discover work activities and occupations related to your interests. The instrument is composed of 60 items and measures six types of occupational interests.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iseek.org\/careers\/interestassessment.html\">Minnesota Careers Interest Assessment<\/a> \u2014 This assessment can help you discover how your interests relate to various occupations. They may even have a description of a project that you\u2019d like to undertake. Despite all of this material, reviewers want to know whether they\u2019d enjoy your company.<\/p>\n<p>They will read your personal statement to answer the question, \u201cWho are you \u2014 as a person?\u201d Are you someone whom they would enjoy having on their team? In their lab? In their workgroup?<br \/>\nThe aim of a personal statement is to create a version of yourself \u2014 a persona or character \u2014 that feels alive and present to the person reading your work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you create a version of yourself that feels alive?<\/strong><br \/>\nPersonal statements are written in the first person using \u201cI.\u201d The position taken by the \u201cI\u201d persona is usually one of reflection. The narrator in a personal statement steps back from daily life and reflects on past experiences in a thoughtful, probing, and considered way.<\/p>\n<p>Personal statements often include stories about yourself. These stories are short, usually a paragraph in length.
