Who are their competitors and how do they differentiate themselves?<\/li>\n<li>What is the history of the organization?<\/li>\n<li>Is it a public, private, non-profit organization, or government agency?<\/li>\n<li>Where is it headquartered? Are there multiple locations? Is the organization international?<\/li>\n<li>What is the size of the organization?<\/li>\n<li>What kind of internship or job openings do they have?<\/li>\n<li>What skills and experiences does this organization value?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the key players of the organization? How is the organization structured?<\/li>\n<li>What is the organization&#8217;s culture, mission, vision, and values?<\/li>\n<li>What products or services does the organization make, sell or provide?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the clients this organization serves?<\/li>\n<li>What has this organization been in the news about lately?<\/li>\n<li>What kind of recognition has this organization received?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Handshake<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.joinhandshake.com\/stu\/employers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Handshake<\/a> is a great place to get a ton of information about employers from a system you are already using.\u00a0 You can also follow employers and organizations, post questions, and read reviews from other students who worked there.\u00a0 You can access jobs right from their profile page.\u00a0 You can also access the employer&#8217;s website to explore further.<\/p>\n<h5>Employer&#8217;s Website(s)<\/h5>\n<p>It may seem obvious, but an employer&#8217;s website has a ton of information that can help you learn more and determine if you are interested in opportunities.\u00a0 Start with the &#8216;Careers&#8217;, &#8216;About Us&#8217;, or &#8216;Contact Us&#8217; sections.\u00a0 The &#8216;News and Events&#8217; sections will show you upcoming activities and recent press releases from organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Most employers have a section of their website to talk about careers, including postings for jobs and internships.\u00a0 Larger companies often have a separate section for students &#8211; sometimes called &#8216;early careers&#8217; or &#8216;campus\/university recruiting&#8217;.\u00a0 Often you can create an account to stay informed of recruiting events and programs, as well as when positions are posted.<\/p>\n<h4>Networking<\/h4>\n<p>Networking is a great way to understand the current, on-the-ground culture of an employer and get a first-hand account of what it&#8217;s like to actually work with the employer &#8211; you can even learn about specific divisions or departments.\u00a0 Once you&#8217;ve done your own research, identify connections through your personal, family, or community connections &#8211; and, as always, the Ole alumni network is there for you!\u00a0 Doing some initial research <em>first<\/em> will allow you to craft a more tailored <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/networking-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outreach message<\/a> and ensure you are making efficient use of your contact&#8217;s time.\u00a0 It will also help you identify the most impactful and useful questions to ask.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/school\/stolaf\/people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a> is a great way to identify Oles or other people who work or have worked for a specific employer.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.alumniq.com\/index.cfm\/login\/via?target=https%3A%2F%2Fstolaf%2Ealumniq%2Ecom%2Findex%2Ecfm%2Fdirectory%3Asearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Olaf Alumni Directory<\/a> is a great way to send Ole alumni an email.\u00a0 (Don&#8217;t worry, when you submit the email form, the Ole will receive a standard email.)<\/p>\n<p>Once you find a contact, request an <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/informational-interviews\/\">informational interview<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h5>Assessing an Employer&#8217;s Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion<\/h5>\n<p>Check out the Piper Center&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/identityresources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Identity-specific Career Resources<\/a> for more information to support your research in this area.<\/p>\n<h5>Glassdoor<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glassdoor<\/a> is a third-party site that provides information about employers (reviews, interview tips, salary information, titles, etc.).\u00a0 \u00a0Much of the information comes through reviews and postings from people affiliated with the company &#8211; keep this in mind as this can often create a negative bias.\u00a0 (e.g. people are more likely motivated to post negative information than positive.)<\/p>\n<h5>LinkedIn &amp; Social Media<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a> is a great place to access key information about an employer.\u00a0 (Remember, they control the content so it is also not an <em>impartial<\/em> source of information.)\u00a0 Most employers post a lot of content related to their business and industry which can be a great source of information and job opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to follow companies of interest to stay up-to-date on current events in your LinkedIn feed.\u00a0 Not only can this help you understand an employer better &#8211; and determine if it&#8217;s a fit for you &#8211; it is also a great way to impress the employer with your knowledge, vocabulary, and awareness.\u00a0 Many companies even announce internship or other student programs on their feeds!<\/p>\n<p>Make sure your <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/linkedin-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn presence is professional<\/a> before you <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/how-to-guides\/networking-guide\/\">start connecting and networking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Company Social Media:<\/strong> Look for pages\/feeds on social media sites, such as X (Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok.\u00a0 Organizations often share unique information here directly in platforms you may already be using on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<h5>Online News and Publications<\/h5>\n<p>It can be really helpful to spend some time reading information published about an employer from\u00a0<em>credible<\/em> news sources.\u00a0 Information from news sites or publications will help you access more impartial information and context about an employer in the greater economy.\u00a0 Just like when you access general news, be sure to research an employer across a few different platforms to get a more accurate picture.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"is-visible show-bullet\"><strong>News Alerts:\u00a0<\/strong> Set up a news alert (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google News Alerts<\/a>) to get updates on an organization or industry.<\/li>\n<li class=\"is-visible show-bullet\"><strong>Industry-Specific Publications:\u00a0<\/strong>Learn what\u2019s happening in the industry by following publications in your industries of interest. Examples include:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Week<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.enr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Engineering News Record<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenonprofittimes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nonprofit Times<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pw.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poets &amp; Writers<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/section\/Home\/5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advertising Age<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fortune<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.backstage.com\/bso\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Backstage<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fastcompany.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"is-visible show-bullet\"><strong>Industry Lists\u202f:<\/strong> There are other organizations that maintain \u201ctop places to work\u201d lists, rankings, and more.
