The prompt focuses on diversity of perspectives, beliefs and lived experience. I\u2019m not a victim.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These students are concerned that they are being asked to share their experiences through a lens of \u201cdifference\u201d as a kind of spectacle. They fear that the institution will admit them only if they tell a story that members of a dominant culture might expect or want to see.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the landscape of higher education today, most students bring some kind of \u201cdifference\u201d with them to campus. Nevertheless, students may not always realize the uniqueness of their experience, and some have approached this essay as if it weren\u2019t meant for them.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These students have said, for example, \u201cI\u2019m from a dominant group, and I come from a background with a lot of privilege. How can I possibly write a diversity essay?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applicants from countries other than the United States may not understand why graduate and professional schools have included this essay in their applications.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These students may be unaware that the prompt is addressing a specific set of current and historical issues around race and ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, and access in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because students\u2019 experiences vary so greatly, advice about how to frame a life story in response to these prompts will be different for each student. Nevertheless, the following guidelines can assist you in drafting a meaningful response and avoiding pitfalls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>First<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the prompts ask you to write about a diversity of <\/span><b>experience, perspectives and beliefs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 something that all applicants have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question to ask is this: what is it about your particular experience, perspectives on life, or beliefs and values that you will bring to the graduate or professional school community <\/span><b>to enrich the experience of those around you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of <\/span><b>beliefs or values<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might include the following:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you value honesty (or another value), and do you have a story to tell that brings to life the role of this value in your life?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have political beliefs that you have pursued by working in campaigns?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have religious beliefs that have shaped how you view and contribute to your community?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of <\/span><b>experiences related to identity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might include the following:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you lived as a racial or ethnic minority in the United States or in a country other than the United States?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you grow up in a rural community or area, perhaps one with limited access to healthcare or to opportunities for education and employment?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have an identity related to your gender that might have required you to navigate challenging circumstances?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you experienced life as an immigrant? a displaced person? A refugee?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of <\/span><b>experiences in your family<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might include the following:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you had a significant responsibility to care for siblings, nieces and nephews, parents, grandparents or other family members?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you experienced a change in your family\u2019s financial situation that has led you to view wealth and possessions from a new perspective?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of <\/span><b>service to a community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might include the following:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you worked or volunteered in non-profit organizations that serve the community?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you taught or tutored children, adolescents, undergraduates, or older adults?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you participated in student government or in other student organizations?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you helped build community through a sports team, musical organization or similar group?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of <\/span><b>entrepreneurship, innovation or travel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might include the following:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you started your own business?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you developed an innovative product or service?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you traveled or worked overseas, while learning and speaking the language(s) of the countries visited?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your task is to share your particular perspectives, beliefs or lived experience and to show how you will draw on these perspectives, beliefs or experiences to contribute to and enrich the graduate or professional school community.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Second<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is no pre-conceived genre \u2013 or type of story \u2013 that you are expected to write for this essay.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an example, you do<\/span><b> not<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have to write what is known as a \u201crags to riches\u201d story or an \u201cI was a victim, and I overcame hardships to reach this stage of my life\u201d story.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its simplest form, the rags to riches story reads like this:\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI come from a poor neighborhood. I worked hard, received scholarships, and did well, and now I\u2019m applying to graduate school. I am a success despite my background\u201d or \u201cI am a success because I overcame the circumstances of my background.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of a \u201crags to riches\u201d story, applicants who have come from challenging backgrounds often write about the people who helped them along the way and about the applicants\u2019 desire to give back (or pay it forward) to enable others to have a similar experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking about a challenging life story in this way shifts the focus from the particular hardships to the giving and receiving that enabled the applicant to flourish and to the gratitude and generosity that are part of what the applicant will bring to a graduate or professional school,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As another example, if you have worked with people from a group that has been, or may be, viewed as underrepresented or marginalized, you do not need to write a story in which you step in as a \u201chero\u201d and \u201csave\u201d them in some way or another.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you worked with veterans of the armed forces? people in prison? people with disabilities? families with food insecurity? people whose immigration status is a concern? elderly people in a retirement home?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you writing about your interactions with these people with <\/span><b>cultural humility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with an understanding that, if you yourself haven\u2019t walked in their shoes or in shoes similar to theirs, you won\u2019t be able fully to understand their experience or their culture?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Third,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as with the other essays that you may be drafting when you apply to graduate or professional school, you need to watch out for the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing that is very dramatic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applicants often write about difficult or challenging experiences in this essay. The basic facts of these experiences are usually more than enough to underscore the seriousness of the events described. Over-dramatizing an experience can actually draw a reader\u2019s attention<\/span><b> away<\/b> <b>from<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the experience.
