{"id":29,"date":"2012-09-25T15:00:04","date_gmt":"2012-09-25T20:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/poli-sci\/?page_id=29"},"modified":"2025-09-02T09:49:59","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T14:49:59","slug":"credit-for-courses-completed-at-other-institutions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/poli-sci\/credit-for-courses-completed-at-other-institutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Credit for Courses Completed at Other Institutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><h2>General policy<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0 A St. Olaf<\/strong><strong> political science major may include a maximum of two credits for courses completed at other institutions.\u00a0 <\/strong>Courses or course equivalents from other institutions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Advanced placement credit<\/em><\/strong>, for an Advanced Placement score of 4 or 5 in U.S. Politics and Government or Comparative Politics and Government (<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/poli-sci\/details-on-counting-advanced-placement-credits-for-political-science-major\/\">more details<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Off-campus courses<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em>defined as political science courses completed through a St. Olaf-affiliated off-campus program (i.e., a program listed in the annual International and Domestic Off-Campus Programs brochure) (<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/poli-sci\/details-on-counting-off-campus-courses-toward-political-science-major\/\">more details<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Transfer courses<\/em><\/strong>, defined as political science courses completed at an institution other than St. Olaf or Carleton (e.g., through a Post-Secondary Education Option [PSEO] course, an January Term or summer school course at another college or university, or a course completed through a non-St. Olaf-affiliated domestic or international program) (<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/poli-sci\/details-about-counting-transfer-courses-towards-political-science-major\/\">more details<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0 Courses taught by Carleton College political science faculty or taught off-campus by St. Olaf political science faculty do not count toward this two-course limit.\u00a0 <\/strong>Courses that do not constitute \u201ccourses completed at other institutions\u201d include political science courses taught at Carleton; off-campus January Term courses taught by St. Olaf political science faculty; and courses taught by a member of the St. Olaf Department of Political Science under the auspices of a St. Olaf semester abroad program (e.g., Global, Middle East, Asia, Australia).<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0 The chair\u2019s approval for credit toward the major must be documented in writing.\u00a0 <\/strong>With the exception of AP credit (which is automatically recorded on a student\u2019s transcript by the Office of the Registrar), a completed <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1jKX1TKtFctXzT6yUsW8OKQ-Hd9p4W4xNp3YlFRRWkPc\/edit?ts=5b6b0c5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Request for<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1jKX1TKtFctXzT6yUsW8OKQ-Hd9p4W4xNp3YlFRRWkPc\/edit?ts=5b6b0c5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> C<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1jKX1TKtFctXzT6yUsW8OKQ-Hd9p4W4xNp3YlFRRWkPc\/edit?ts=5b6b0c5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">redit<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1jKX1TKtFctXzT6yUsW8OKQ-Hd9p4W4xNp3YlFRRWkPc\/edit?ts=5b6b0c5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Toward a Major<\/a>, signed by the department chair, must be on file with the student\u2019s academic advisor and the Academic Administrative Assistant of the Department of Political Science in order to receive political science credit for courses completed at other institutions. If seeking credit for the international relations concentration, a <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/ragnD5Qf1qGjwhKf9\">Request for INTLR concentration<\/a> must be completed.
