(CSA!) is hosting a talk by Noor Asif,\u00a0an Art History graduate stu<span style=\"color: #000000;\">dent from University of Washington, entitled &#8220;Repurposing the Orient: Representation of South Asian Identities in the Diaspora and Motherland(s).&#8221;\u00a0<b>The talk will be from\u00a0<span class=\"m_-1204632137062345105m_3064922317861319039gmail-aBn\"><span class=\"m_-1204632137062345105m_3064922317861319039gmail-aQJ\"><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_863339597\"><span class=\"aQJ\">5-6PM<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0in Viking Theater, with a reception beforehand from\u00a0<span class=\"m_-1204632137062345105m_3064922317861319039gmail-aBn\"><span class=\"m_-1204632137062345105m_3064922317861319039gmail-aQJ\"><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_863339598\"><span class=\"aQJ\">4-5PM<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the Norway room.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The talk will<\/span>\u00a0examine how Bollywood, artists from the subcontinent, and artists from the diaspora all create their own notions of a South Asian identity. Some important ideas that the talk will tackle are the notions of orientalism and re-orientialism, collective identity vs subjective identity, how representation is largely connected to commercialism and what &#8220;sells,&#8221; and what happens to authenticity in the midst of all these processes.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This\u00a0Thursday, September 20th, Celebrate South Asia!
