I\u2019m talking <\/span>Double Indemnity<\/span><\/i> or <\/span>The Postman Only Rings Twice<\/span><\/i>. \u00a0Were you entranced by Kathleen Turner in the film <\/span>Body Heat<\/span><\/i>, or by Linda Fiorentino in <\/span>The Last Seduction<\/span><\/i>? Then you should read <\/span>Sunburn<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Noir <\/span><\/i>fiction gets reinvented for every generation, but there is a distinctively American subgenre that persists. \u00a0Laura Lippman is aware of the tradition: she references the novels of James M. Cain both in the setting of <\/span>Sunburn<\/span><\/i> and in the behavior of its <\/span>femme fatale<\/span><\/i>, Polly. She\u2019s compelling. She\u2019s slightly off. More than slightly. But even more compelling, the more you know. That becomes Adam\u2019s problem.<\/span><\/p>\n
