Active Shooter/Hostile Intruder (copy)

HOW TO RESPOND WHEN AN ACTIVE SHOOTER IS IN YOUR VICINITY:

1. Run

1. Run

Make sure it is safe to leave the area.  Use your eyes and ears to determine if it is safe to run.

Once in a safe place, call 9-1-1 and give detailed information about what is happening.  Do not assume someone else has already called the police.

2. Hide

2. Hide

Do not huddle together, as this creates an easier target.

3. Fight

3. Fight

Fighting is a last resort to be used only when your life is in imminent danger.  However, sometimes fighting may be the first and only option.

(You must quickly determine the most reasonable way to protect your own life!)

INFORMATION YOU SHOULD PROVIDE WHEN CALLING 911:

  1. Location of the active shooter (building and floor)
  2. Number of shooters (if more than one)
  3. Physical description of shooter(s)
  4. Number and type of weapons held by the shooter(s)
  5. Number of potential victims at the location

HOW TO RESPOND WHEN LAW ENFORCEMENT ARRIVES ON THE SCENE:

  1. Remain calm and follow officer’s instructions
  2. Immediately raise your hands and spread your fingers
  3. Keep your hands visible at all times
  4. Avoid making quick movements toward officers
  5. Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling
  6. Follow all commands while you are removed from the scene

In the event of any active shooter or attacker, a rapid response by local law enforcement to the scene and communication from the College to the community by OleAlert would occur.  Initial alert messages would be followed by critical information and regular updates.
