Toward this goal in recent years, they have pursued internships (<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/race-and-ethnic-studies\/core-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RACE 294\/394<\/a>) with the Leadership Education in Asia Pacifics, Minnesota Department of Human Services, Public Defenders Office in Cook County, Urban Scholars Program, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar&#8217;s Washington D.C. Office, among others. Some sample internship topics include Native American health, Somali immigrant community in Minneapolis, and urban education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To seek RACE credit for an academic internship, contact the program director\u00a0about your intended plans and\u00a0consult the Piper Center&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/pipercenter\/find-internships-research-opportunities\/getting-academic-credit-for-an-internship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines<\/a> for academic internships. You will also want to identify an <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/race-and-ethnic-studies\/faculty-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affiliated RACE faculty member<\/a> who will serve as your internship supervisor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">RACE majors and concentrators may count one academic internship toward their degree progress.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Independent Study\/Research<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Appropriation of African American Women, Black Student Unions and Ethnic Studies, Contemporary Chicanas, Environmental Racism, Hip Hop Social Impact, Navajo Healthcare, and Race and Law Enforcement are but a few examples of independent study\/research courses that RACE majors and concentrators have developed and completed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students who desire to undertake independent study\/research through Race and Ethnic Studies should first contact an <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/race-and-ethnic-studies\/faculty-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affiliated RACE program faculty member<\/a> who will serve as the I.S.\/R.&#8217;s supervisor, develop a proposal and schedule with a preliminary list of readings, and complete\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/registrar\/files\/2021\/04\/ISIR-Application-fillable.pdf\">the form<\/a>\u00a0to be submitted to the registrar&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">RACE majors and concentrators may count one independent study\/research toward their degree progress.<\/p>\n<p><!-- begin-migrated-from-panel-builder --><!-- end-migrated-from-panel-builder --><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Academic Internships Committed to social justice, RACE majors and concentrators are passionate about integrating their classroom learning with off-campus experiences.
