Race Matters was founded in 2018 with the goal of providing a co-curricular space for students to discuss and learn about racial justice issues of the 21st century. Students who complete the program will gain the First-Year Seminar (FYS), Writing and Rhetoric (WRR), Creativity (CRE), and Power and Race (PAR) Ole Core Attributes.

Race Matters is a three-course sequence program with a humanities and social science focus. Participants in the program take a First-Year Seminar course in the fall (RAMAT 110), Intro to Race and Ethnic Studies in January term (RACE 121), and First-Year Writing course in the spring (RAMAT 130).

Students in Race Matters benefit from an integrated intellectual and community-engagement based experience. They will learn about the impact of discrimination and oppression on a variety of marginalized communities within and beyond the United States. Most importantly, students will learn about local, national, and international forms of community activism and organizing.

Throughout their courses, students will conduct original research and create projects that examine their identity and role as racial justice change makers. Previously, students have created social action creative projects that research topics such as food apartheid, Black maternal mortality, the lingering effects of racial segregation in the Midwest, and the policing of Latine/a immigrants.

Why is the Program Called Race Matters?

Race Matters holds double-meaning. The program title is both an affirmation that race does in fact shape much of our world and a declaration that the intentional exploration of race is an important part of building a more just world. Though the program focuses on race, we understand that racism is inseparable from other systems of oppression such as patriarchy, heterosexism, ableism, and capitalism.

All incoming first-year students who are interested in the program should choose “Race Matters” as their top choice for a First-Year Experience when filling out their Welcome Survey. If you have questions, please reach out to Dr. Jaden Janak, Program Director of Race Matters.
