As President, Fiona serves as the Chief Executive Officer of SGA, responsible for the administration and coordination of the operations and policies of the SGA. She chairs the SGA Executive Committee and advocates for, receives feedback from, and represents SGA and the student body on and off campus. Fiona meets with the Director of Student Activities, Brandon Cash, the Dean of Students Office representatives as well as St. Olaf College President Susan Rundell Singer to discuss and advocate for students issues along with the SGA Vice President, Karen Henriquez Fajardo, among other duties. campus and its relevance to removing unwarranted ICE officers. What spaces are considered public? How does this public\/private space distinction affect students&#039; rights?\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n                <\/button>\n                <div\n\t\t\t\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion-6a0397eeadbb0-header-0\"\n\t\t\t\t\t class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content site-panel__accordion-content context-content t-content \"\t\t\t\t\tid=\"accordion-6a0397eeadbb0-content-0\"\n\t\t\t\t\trole=\"tabpanel\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-depth=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-index=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-autop=\"true\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-name=\"accordion_content\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-livetext\n                >\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <div class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content-inner context-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u25cf While ICE or other law enforcement may physically enter public campus areas more<br \/>\neasily than private ones, they do not have the inherent authority to compel students to<br \/>\nidentify themselves simply for being present in those spaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf There are legal and physical boundaries that define how law enforcement, including ICE,<br \/>\ncan interact with individuals on campus. The distinction relies heavily on the accessibility<br \/>\nof a specific location and the level of privacy a person can expect there.<br \/>\n\u25cb Public Spaces: These are areas where the general public is permitted to enter<br \/>\nand traverse without specific authorization. Examples include unlocked lobbies<br \/>\n(such as those in Buntrock Commons), sidewalks, and outdoor green spaces.<br \/>\n\u25cb Private Spaces: These are areas with restricted access where an individual has a<br \/>\nreasonable expectation of privacy. Examples include dormitories, private offices,<br \/>\nand other secured spaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Fundamental rights remain constant regardless of location:<br \/>\n\u25cb No Obligation to Identify: Unless a student is operating a motor vehicle, they are<br \/>\nnot required to identify themselves to law enforcement.<br \/>\n\u25cb If a student is in a public or private space and is not suspected of committing a<br \/>\ncrime, they do not have to provide identification or information to officers should<br \/>\nthey encounter them.<br \/>\n\u25cb In private spaces like dorms or classrooms, law enforcement typically requires a<br \/>\nwarrant or specific authorization to enter. In public spaces, officers can move and<br \/>\nobserve just as any member of the public would. It does not excuse other possible misconduct, such as<br \/>\nproviding alcohol to minors, assault, property damage, or distribution of illicit substances,<br \/>\nand it does not prevent action by law enforcement or other third parties.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Although no disciplinary action will be taken, a student seeking a Medical Exception will<br \/>\nmeet with an Associate Dean to discuss the incident and any appropriate support or<br \/>\nfollow-up. Ensuring<br \/>\nhealth care coverage to employees and the implementing the new State-mandated Paid<br \/>\nFamily and Medical Leave program are two examples. Costs for campus operations like electricity, natural gas, water, and food continue to increase with need and inflation.
