{"id":23,"date":"2013-03-05T15:04:10","date_gmt":"2013-03-05T21:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/spanish\/?page_id=23"},"modified":"2023-06-07T08:37:02","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T13:37:02","slug":"leon-narvaez","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/spanish\/leon-narvaez\/","title":{"rendered":"Le\u00f3n Narv\u00e1ez"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>M 11:45 &#8211; 12:45<br \/>\nT 3:00 &#8211; 3:45<br \/>\nTh 3:45 &#8211; 4:30<br \/>\nand by appointment<\/p>\n<p>Professor Narv\u00e1ez received a B.A. degree in political science and a<br \/>\nPh.D. degree in Hispanic literature and linguistics from the University of<br \/>\nMinnesota. \u00a0He finished his secondary training at Colegio Nueva<br \/>\nGranada (Bogota, Colombia), completed part of his college work at the<br \/>\nUniversidad de Navarra (Pamplona, Spain) and has lived in Puerto Rico,<br \/>\nMexico, Colombia, Spain, and Costa Rica. \u00a0His research interests<br \/>\ninclude cultural and migration studies as well as literary and<br \/>\nlinguistic analysis. \u00a0 He has worked as an administrator, consultant,<br \/>\neditor, interpreter, recording artist, and translator. \u00a0In addition to<br \/>\nnumerous articles, and some language games and reviews, his published<br \/>\nwork includes nine books and two workbooks edited or written by him or<br \/>\nin collaboration with others. \u00a0Narv\u00e1ez is the former president of the<br \/>\nstate association for teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, former<br \/>\ncoordinator of the Minnesota State Spanish Contest, and site<br \/>\ncoordinator for the Festival Quijote. \u00a0He has served twice as the<br \/>\npresident of the North Central Council of Latin Americanists, one of<br \/>\neight regional associations for specialists in Latin America, as well<br \/>\nas three separate times as the Director of the programs of the<br \/>\nAssociated Colleges of the Midwest \u00a0(ACM) in Costa Rica. \u00a0Of over<br \/>\nfifty awards\/honors, some examples are: \u00a0in 1987 he received the<br \/>\nRicardo A. Narv\u00e1ez Award for excellence in the teaching of Spanish<br \/>\nfrom the Minnesota chapter of the American Association of Teachers of<br \/>\nSpanish and Portuguese (AATSP) and in 1988 he was recognized by the<br \/>\nAATSP through a national teaching award as the outstanding<br \/>\ncollege\/university teacher of Spanish in the United States. \u00a0In 1989<br \/>\nhe was awarded the Emma Birkmaier Award by the MN Council on the<br \/>\nTeaching of Foreign Languages \u00a0as the outstanding foreign language<br \/>\nteacher in MN. \u00a0In 2001 Narv\u00e1ez was given the Award of Merit by the<br \/>\nNorth Central Council of Latin Americanists (NCCLA) for promoting<br \/>\nunderstanding and cooperation between the U.S. and Latin America.
