Take the time to discuss expectations with peers.\u00a0 If interpersonal conflict arise that can not be resolved, advice and counsel should be sought from residence life staff. The cooperation of all residents and guests is expected. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents will be held accountable for their guests\u2019 behavior and are responsible for informing guests of all policies. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live-in Staff at times are called upon to enforce college policies and regulations. Residents are expected to cooperate. Other posting guidelines at the College can also be found in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/buntrock\/postings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buntrock Commons Posting and Advertising.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residence Life must approve all\u00a0 advertisements for posting within the residence halls and the immediate exteriors of the residence hall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All interested parties are encouraged to send (<\/span><a href=\"mailto:housing@stolaf.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">housing@stolaf.edu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) an electronic copy of advertisement material before printing for approval.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Materials that include alcohol, THC and any other illicit drugs will not be approved.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entities external to St. Olaf College must have an agreement from Residence Life to advertise.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All groups and individuals wishing to publicize events, services, or fundraisers in residence halls must follow these established guidelines. A Residence Life program, sponsored program,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Residence Life staff and Residence Life resident organizations, i.e. Hall Council, RA and RHA may be exempted from a specific policy and procedure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSd_EwHdNQ6n9Z0ngo11PrTxLZgBQ0WcKEfco1nOUVn3GTgf5A\/viewform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residence Life Advertising\/Marketing Request Form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The following may Request Advertisement\/Marketing within the residence halls:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registered Student Organizations with St. Olaf College<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Olaf College academic, administrative and staff offices\/departments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vendors and businesses officially affiliated with St. Olaf College\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All other vendors and businesses must be partnered with one of the approved entities above.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Length of Time for Advertisement\/Marketing to Occur<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maximum standard length of time that advertisement\/marketing may be present in the residence halls is 14 calendar days unless otherwise stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The policy will include the following but is not limited to:<\/b><\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"8\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"50%\"><b>The policy will include the following but is not limited to:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flyers\/Posters<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residence Hall Monitors\/Tightrope<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hall Collections<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking internal residence hall pictures\/video\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternative Displays<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hall Storming (walking the hall floors and\/or going door to door)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hall Table Displays<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"50%\"><b>Flyers\/Posters must include the minimum information:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flyers\/Posters (at least 2 per hall \/ (24 minimum))\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Letter (8.5\u2033 x 11\u2033)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Tabloid (11\u2033 x 17\u2033)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Legal (8.5\u2033 x 14\u2033)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The event date and time (if applicable)<\/li>\n<li>The event location (if applicable)<\/li>\n<li>The name of the sponsoring organization\/department<\/li>\n<li>At minimum 1 form of contact information (email, phone, etc.)\n<ul>\n<li>Please note this may not be a requirement for other offices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flyers\/Posters must be delivered to the Residence Life Hub (Ytterboe Hall) and approved at least seven (7) calendar days before the first advertised date of any event or offering.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All materials will be removed the day after the event is held.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Posters without a specified end-date will be removed 14 days after submission.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Residence Hall Monitors\/Tightrope<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Space is limited and approved on a case-by-case. Not all requests can be approved.<\/li>\n<li>Only information that pertains to the residential experience, Residence Life-partnered programming, or information that is otherwise highly beneficial to residential students living at St. Olaf.<\/li>\n<li>Electronic submissions may be submitted to <a href=\"mailto:housing@stolaf.edu\">housing@stolaf.edu<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Hall Collections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hall collections (i.e. clothing drives) are allowed within the residence hall and considered on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n<p>Allowed months: September, October, November, January, February, March, April<\/p>\n<p>Criteria for hall collections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bin must be accompanied with a flyer\/poster stating purpose, timeframe, and contact info.<\/li>\n<li>Submit a picture of bins\/boxes used for collection<\/li>\n<li>Bin\/box must be appropriate for items being collected and\u00a0aesthetically appropriate for residence halls.<\/li>\n<li>Bins must be checked every 72 hours.<\/li>\n<li>Provide name\/email address on who will check bins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Taking Internal Residence Hall Pictures\/Video<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pictures and\/or video within residence halls must have written permission of St. Olaf College Marketing and Communication and\/or Residence Life.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Alternative Displays<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alternative displays may include but are not limited to banners, hallway displays, roll paper signs, tall board displays.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alternative displays are approved on a case-by-case basis.<\/li>\n<li>Requestors should begin inquiries by emailing <a href=\"mailto:housing@stolaf.edu\">housing@stolaf.edu<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Door to Door (Hall Storming)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hall stormings are allowed and considered on a case-by-case basis. Recreation Rooms, Kitchens and Hallways<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following guidelines have been established to provide appropriate meeting spaces for the College community while also assuring that hall residents have optimum use of their building\u2019s facilities:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Live-in Staff for each respective residence hall schedules events in residence hall common area spaces including lounges and recreation rooms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The residents of a building will have priority when scheduling hall or corridor functions in their own lounge or recreation room up to 24-hours in advance of the activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both residence hall lounges and recreation rooms will not be scheduled for the same time in any one residence hall. This practice assures residents of each building the use of one or the other of these facilities at all times.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Area Coordinator is not obligated to grant space if it is seems that the request may infringe upon the space needs of the residents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groups are expected to cooperate with Residence Life staff of that particular hall and are responsible for the satisfactory clean-up of the facility immediately following the function.\u00a0 Groups that abuse the privilege of using residence hall facilities may be denied permission to use facilities in the future.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A request for occasional use of these facilities for classes by faculty should be directed to the Director of Residence Life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speakers are only allowed to speak in the residence halls when sponsored by a recognized student organization and approved the Office of Student Activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Common Area: Kitchens<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitchens are available for student use in every hall.\u00a0 All Residence Life supplied cooking materials must remain in the kitchen and may not be taken out the kitchen for personal use.\u00a0 All items checked out must be returned cleaned.\u00a0 It is the responsibility of the person(s) using the kitchen to clean it to an acceptable condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the safety of all, limited kitchen\/cooking appliances are permitted within the residence halls. The list below is not exhaustive either for non-permitted or permitted appliances. Some prohibited items identified above may be allowed in residence life managed spaces with personal kitchens. Tampering with and\/or misuse of fire and safety equipment, including fire alarms, fire doors, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, exit signs, heat sensors, and any other safety equipment is prohibited. The starting of any fire on college property without written authorization is strictly prohibited. St. Olaf reserves the right to take disciplinary action and\/or refer to local law enforcement agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only heat-producing electrical appliances that are UL (Underwriters Laboratories) approved and that have enclosed heating elements.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of prohibited appliances\/items that are not permitted include but is not limited to: electric blankets, portable saunas, items with exposed heating elements, space heaters, air conditioners, and halogen lamps. The hallways must be kept free of debris and personal items.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No materials may be draped or affixed overhead (i.e. on the ceiling or over light bulbs).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flammable substances, such as gasoline, propane and cleaning fluids, are not to be used or stored in college residences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No storage of flammable materials, such as wood (including sheets of wood), empty boxes, excessive amounts of paper or cardboard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only one appliance per outlet.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multi-outlet (octopus plugs) are not allowed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daisy chains (connecting one electrical cord to another) Also, multiple outlet \u2018octopus\u2019 plugs are not allowed, as they can be a fire hazard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surge protectors are permitted.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy duty extension cords are permitted. You may not use them in a manner that will not create a fire hazard (i.e. running them under carpet, overloading outlets).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Splicing of electrical wires or removal of any outlet plates or light switches is prohibited.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fire doors are to remain closed at all times.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrical appliances must not be left unattended. Once an appliance has been used, be sure to unplug it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microfridges\/Refrigerators may not be placed in closets. 400;\"> Those guests who are not in compliance with college policy including the Residence Hall Policy &amp; Procedures and the Student Code of Conduct may be asked to leave campus, and their hosts may face disciplinary action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Guests<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guests are individuals who are not residents of the building that they are entering.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All guests must be hosted by a resident of the building they are style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guests who violate guest procedures may lose the privilege of entering a residence hall that is not assigned to them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Visitors<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visitors are residential students who are assigned to the building in which they live, but are entering a Unauthorized possession or use of a master key subjects students to disciplinary action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Room Keys<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each resident will be given a room key upon check-in. The key number will be noted in the appropriate space on the Room Inventory Form that the resident completes.\u00a0 In the event a resident loses their room key or does not return it at check-out, they will be charged a replacement fee.\u00a0 Residents may not make duplicate copies of their room and\/or house key. Residents must clean after themselves. nor should that sound reach such levels as to be a nuisance to occupants of adjoining rooms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creation of noise disturbances in the corridors, bathrooms, lounges and other public areas (i.e., loud conversations, yelling, slamming doors, rowdy behavior) is unacceptable for community living.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b><i>Courtesy Hours<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All times not designated as quiet hours are considered courtesy hours. Behavioral expectations for courtesy hours are not as meticulously defined as those for quiet hours.\u00a0 However, during courtesy hours, residents engaging in normal day-to-day behavior are expected to act in a manner which demonstrates respect for the rights of others to study and sleep in their rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Mid-Term and Finals\/Examinations Period\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During mid-term and final examination week of each term and\/or period of time just prior to the beginning of finals week, quiet hours will be implemented on a 24-hour-per-day basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Quiet Floors: Times and Expectations<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimum quiet hours for a quiet floor will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 9 a.m. each day. Residents may vote for additional quiet hours if they wish. Students caught on a roof are subject to a fine and disciplinary action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For safety reasons, ledges are not to be used for storage, nor are students allowed to walk or sit on ledges or roofs. Such persons shall knock and, if requested, identify themselves before entering.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Search<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rooms may be entered under the following conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide room maintenance inspections, repair service or perform a safety inspection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When there is reasonable cause to believe that college regulations or laws are being violated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For an emergency situation that requires that the room be entered<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a resident vacates a room for a break period<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovery of stolen college property.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an occupant is not present during a room check, authorized persons will be accompanied by another individual. Whenever entry is obtained by use of a master\/pass key except for repair, maintenance or its assessment, or for health and\u00a0 welfare reasons, a written report will be submitted indicating such entry, the reasons for it, and any results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illegal items or items in violation of the college policies in plain view will be removed if they are noticed in the course of a room maintenance or break inspection, or in response to a violation of college or departmental policy. The resident will receive written notification of this action if confiscation of property is required when the student is absent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Health &amp; Safety Inspections<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designated health and safety inspection will occur during the academic year.
