{"id":408,"date":"2016-04-14T13:00:24","date_gmt":"2016-04-14T18:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/title-ix\/?p=408"},"modified":"2016-04-14T15:44:08","modified_gmt":"2016-04-14T20:44:08","slug":"president-andersons-april-15-message","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/title-ix\/2016\/04\/14\/president-andersons-april-15-message\/","title":{"rendered":"President Anderson names working group members"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>Dear Members of the St. Olaf Community,<\/p>\n<p>Last week I wrote to you about the important issue of sexual assault and the\u00a0rigorous debate in the St. Olaf community about how we can best address incidents\u00a0that threaten the safety and well-being of our students.<\/p>\n<p>I announced the formation of the Title IX Working Group to critically review our\u00a0policies and procedures, seek input from the community, and make\u00a0recommendations for policy changes to be implemented by the start of the 2016-17\u00a0school year. This email announces the membership of that group. Their work\u00a0begins immediately. The first steps include defining a process and timeline and\u00a0obtaining student feedback before students depart campus at the end of the term, so\u00a0that the committee has ample opportunity to receive their suggestions and\u00a0concerns.<\/p>\n<p>This group is undertaking a critical task that will require both significant study and\u00a0a sense of urgency. It is empowered to proceed independently and to retain expert\u00a0advice and counsel at its own discretion.<\/p>\n<p>The Working Group is charged with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conducting a comprehensive review of the college\u2019s Title IX policies and\u00a0procedures with transparency, rigor, and a strong commitment to St. Olaf\u2019s\u00a0values;<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring compliance with the latest federal and state regulations and\u00a0guidelines;<\/li>\n<li>Seeking input and advice from students who have participated firsthand in\u00a0St. Olaf\u2019s Title IX processes and from other members of the St. Olaf family;<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring that the diverse backgrounds, perspectives and opinions of our\u00a0community are reflected in our Title IX policies;<\/li>\n<li>Considering the policies and practices of other colleges and universities with\u00a0particularly robust policies, and the thoughts of other experts; and<\/li>\n<li>Providing informed and specific recommendations on how the college can\u00a0improve its Title IX policies to the President by July 15, 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Members of St. Olaf\u2019s Title IX Working Group include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tim Maudlin \u201973, Chair; member of the St. Olaf Board of Regents and Chair of\u00a0the Board\u2019s Audit Committee<\/li>\n<li>Emma Lind \u201917, Student Government Association President-elect and past\u00a0Co-chair, the St. Olaf It\u2019s On Us campaign, a White House initiative to change\u00a0the way people think about sexual assault<\/li>\n<li>Kaelie Lund \u201916, Co-chair, St. Olaf Sexual Assault Resource Network (SARN)<\/li>\n<li>Ryan Bowles, Athletic Director<\/li>\n<li>Matt Marohl, Campus Pastor<\/li>\n<li>Sue Smalling \u201897, Associate Professor of Social Work<\/li>\n<li>Karla Benson-Rutten, Title IX Coordinator, Macalester College<\/li>\n<li>Jill Fedje \u201985, Assistant Ramsey County Attorney<\/li>\n<li>Carl Lehmann \u201991, higher education and Title IX attorney at Gray Plant\u00a0Mooty, and co-founder of trainED<\/li>\n<li>Erica Staab-Absher, CMT, BSW, Executive Director, HOPE Center<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regent Tim Maudlin \u201973 will chair the group. Tim serves on the St. Olaf Board of\u00a0Regents and chairs its Audit Committee which oversees the College\u2019s process for\u00a0monitoring compliance with laws, regulations, and codes of conduct. He also serves\u00a0on the Board of Directors of Luther Seminary. He completed 12 years of service on\u00a0the Augsburg Fortress Board of Trustees this past year. He currently serves on\u00a0seven corporate boards, always as an independent director and as Audit Committee\u00a0chair. I am confident that under Tim\u2019s leadership, the Working Group will complete\u00a0its charge and recommend productive changes.<\/p>\n<p>We have created a <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/title-ix\/title-ix-working-group\/\">dedicated page<\/a>\u00a0on St. Olaf\u2019s website\u00a0where the community can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Submit recommendations, concerns and ideas;<\/li>\n<li>Learn more about working group members;<\/li>\n<li>Read the charge that will guide the group\u2019s work; and<\/li>\n<li>Access meeting summaries, timelines, and updates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I encourage you to visit the site and subscribe to ongoing updates. The Working\u00a0Group will deliver its recommendations to me by July 15, and I will share them with\u00a0the community.<\/p>\n<p>We are grateful for the Working Group\u2019s willingness to serve the St. Olaf community\u00a0on a very important issue. We look forward to carefully considering all of its\u00a0recommendations and commit to implementing any policy changes before the start\u00a0of the 2016-17 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Care, compassion, and a commitment to continuous learning and growth define the\u00a0St. Olaf community.
