Norway has become an incredibly popular travel destination for children and their extended families partially due to Norway being being the perfect combination of safe and scenic and also to Disney’s Academy Award-winning film Frozen. From troll hunting in the forest, wandering through a centuries old town, meeting the three billy goats gruff, visiting some of the places that inspired the backdrop of Frozen, experiencing a 2-day viking voyage, this will be an adventure for the whole family to enjoy and remember! Themes from each of the locations will be explored through age appropriate activities. This 11 day Norwegian adventure is designed with the elementary child and family in mind, but anyone young at heart will enjoy this adventure!
After a few days in Oslo exploring sites around Frozen, Norse mythology, Norwegian history, and chocolate (just for fun!), we will venture north an hour by bus to Hunderfossen. Here we will be greeted by the world’s largest troll! We will stay here two days. Options to explore include a fairytale park, which has something for every age to enjoy: go through the the fairytale castle, take a family rafting ride, visit the farm where the three billy goats gruff live, try the go carts or try your luck saving the princess at the troll drop. We will also dine at Trollsalen, a unique fairytale restaurant whose ceiling is supported by 6 enormous trolls. We will stay adjacent to the park so families can come and go as needed while recovering from jetlag.
Then we will embark on a long bus ride broken up by two exciting stops along the way: Ringebu Stave church and Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim before arriving at Stiklestad, where the viking king Olav Haraldsson fell in the battle against local chieftains and was later declared Saint Olav. Here we take a step 1,000 years back in time to experience life as a viking on the farm, visit cultural exhibits, enjoy an intimate concert in St. Olav’s church and feast like a viking!
We will be staying at family friendly hotels, and travel at a slower pace. During our bus rides and down times we will have arts and crafts, story times (with props!), coloring, bus bingo, games, sing-a-longs and other activities all connected to the theme of each location. If your child needs more of a break, you are welcome to skip out on whatever you need to accommodate your child’s needs. Buses will have a bathroom and we can make extra bathroom breaks as needed. We will also have informative talks for the adults who would like more in depth insight to the places we are visiting.
