She also holds an M.A. in Art History, a B.F.A. in Studio Art, and a B.A. in Humanities from the University of Colorado. In 2017, she was awarded an American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowship. In 2022, she was awarded a Cassling Award for Teaching Innovation for her work on the Acquisitions Project; you can read more about the project\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/news\/student-led-acquisition-project-diversifies-colleges-art-collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/news\/student-led-acquisition-project-diversifies-colleges-art-collection&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1742388082112000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1nWTztw7-NcfMH6SMeMDZt\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Ryan&#8217;s areas of research include Transatlantic visual culture, modern and contemporary arts of the African diaspora, African American art, Latin American art, intersectional feminism, and women artists. With a decolonial and feminist perspective, her work engages with issues of race and gender through theories of consumption, labor, recuperation, and care &#8211; frequently\u00a0as they intersect with maternity. An occasional curator, Dr. Ryan has organized exhibitions on contemporary film, video, and photography,\u00a0focused on artists of the Caribbean and Gulf Coast. She has a professional background in the museum field, specifically education and outreach, at The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, The Norton Museum of Art, and The Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University.<\/p>\n<p>At St. Olaf she teaches courses in Modern and Contemporary Art, including Introduction to Art History and Methods of Art History. Some favorite courses include Latin American Modernism, Museum Controversies, Art Since 1945, and African American Art. In January of 2023, she greatly enjoys teaching\u00a0<em>Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe and Arts of New Mexico<\/em>, leading a group of students through artists&#8217; studios, deserts, galleries, hiking trails, museums, restaurants, and ski hills of Northern New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024 Yale University Press published a volume Hannah co-edited\u00a0with Lesley Wolff titled\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/aaeportal.com\/publications\/-31718\/nourish-and-resist-food-and-feminisms-in-contemporary-global-caribbean-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/aaeportal.com\/publications\/-31718\/nourish-and-resist-food-and-feminisms-in-contemporary-global-caribbean-art&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1742388082112000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3PEyE-nh4kajE5EX-a3Y55\">Nourish and Resist: Food and Feminisms in Contemporary Global Caribbean Art<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>available on the Art and Architecture e-Portal.\u00a0She is currently working on another book,\u00a0<em>Liquid Gold: Milk in Transatlantic Visual Culture<\/em>, which is under contract with Yale UP. Things don&#8217;t always go according to plan, and many things don&#8217;t work the same way as back home. Patience and good humour will go a long way in this beautiful destination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movement between cities will be by air-conditioned private motor coach. Movement within each city and at cultural\/historic sites will be on foot, requiring a lot of walking and standing, often over uneven ground. You should be capable of walking a mile or more at a time and up to five to seven miles per day, often over uneven terrain, of climbing stairs that may not have handrails, of climbing in and out of various types of transportation, of keeping pace with an active group of travelers on long days of traveling,of dealing with the emotional highs and lows that can occur when experiencing different cultures, and be a considerate member of the group (prompt, courteous and flexible).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any participant who has demonstrated an inability, in the opinion of the tour leader, of keeping up with the group or of safely participating in program activities may be prohibited from participating in certain activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage throughout the tour. Traveling lightly is highly recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hotels in Cuba are government-run, which means renovations are few and far between.
