Yoga in Italy

We welcome you on a wellness and cultural retreat in the relaxing Umbrian countryside. You’ll experience the perfect combination of yoga and cultural interaction with food, wine, and local history.

First, we’ll settle in at a converted farm called Cai Meli. Set within the gentle hills of Umbria and touched by the scented winds of the Apennines, the property is composed of a large manor house dating back to the 18th century and a smaller farmhouse. Both buildings are a mix of modern and traditional with a high degree of elegance and comfort. The interiors were renovated faithfully to reflect the Umbrian tradition of wooden beams and terra cotta floors. Both farmhouses have wonderful views of the olive groves and the serene rolling hills of the estate.

Then, we’ll start our twice-daily yoga in the yoga studio, which is in the converted stable and overlooks an unheated infinity pool surrounded by rosemary and lavender bushes, the beautiful olive groves and wooded hillsides. We’ll work on increasing flexibility, boost physical and mental strength, and improve respiration, energy and vitality, among the many other benefits of yoga, all in a relaxing and regenerating environment.

Join us for as little or as many of the yoga sessions as you like. There will be plenty else to do, because we’ll also explore our surroundings, getting to know country life in this region of Italy – its food, art history, and customs.

Finally, we’ll enjoy one another’s company amidst superb three-course Umbrian dinners, prepared by a local chef, and Italian wine. Every detail will be taken care of so that you can relax, restore, and return home filled with abbondanza!

Program Leaders  

Jeffrey Bores began his yoga journey in 1998. He was instantaneously drawn to Sri K. Pattabhi Jois’ Ashtanga Yoga while attending a class taught by Master Yoga Instructor Monique Maxwell. In 2000, Jeffrey completed his teacher training with Monique and began instructing yoga sessions in the Twin Cities. Jeffrey has continued to study with other prominent teachers both nationally and locally, including Erika Halweil, Corey DeRosa, Larry Schultz, David Swenson, Annie Carpenter, and Noah Maze.
With a teaching style that encourages students to delve deeply and compassionately into their practice using breath and awareness of proper alignment, Jeffrey makes his classes accessible to students of all levels. His yoga sessions are challenging, but they always retain a playful element. His sense of compassion and humor are always present.

Since 2006, Jeffrey is the director of taraNa Yoga, a strong and vibrant yoga community in Southwest Minneapolis. taraNa has been named Best Yoga Studio in the Twin Cities by City Pages and the Southwest Journal. In addition to teaching yoga at taraNa, he practices law with and is the managing partner of Chestnut Cambronne in Minneapolis.

What to Expect   

Space is very limited; we have room for only one single occupancy traveler. All others will need to share a room (separate beds). In addition, most bathrooms are shared by 2 rooms. For more information on the property, visit

The weather in September should be delightful, with highs around 77°F and lows around 56°F. However, keep in mind that temperatures rarely actually fall on the average. Be prepared for a variation of 5-10 degrees in either direction. The studio is unheated, and morning practices can start a bit chilly. We recommend packing light layers that can be added or removed as needed. Rainfall averages about 2.5 inches, so you may also want a light rain jacket or travel umbrella.

Transportation will be by private car. However, since this is Europe, you should be able to walk up and down hills and stairs, and on uneven surfaces. To fully participate in this program, you should have practiced yoga before and be able to walk a minimum of five miles per day, stand for 2 to 3 hours at a time, climb stairs that may not have handrails, keep pace with an active group of travelers on long days of traveling, deal with the emotional highs and lows that can occur when experiencing a different culture, and travel with a group for several hours each day. Facilities, resources, accommodations and protections for disabled and special needs individuals can be sharply limited outside the U.S. Note that wheelchairs, personal care attendants and assistance from fellow travelers are not provided.

You are responsible for reviewing the specific requirements for your program and judging the appropriateness of these travel activities to your physical, mental and behavioral capabilities. Any participant who is unable to fulfill the program requirements may have their registration cancelled. Any participant who has demonstrated an inability, in the opinion of the program leader, of keeping up with the group or of safely participating in program activities may be prohibited from participating in certain activities or excused from the program.

You should plan on seeing your family physician or a travel doctor at least four to six weeks prior to departure, preferably earlier, to talk about routine vaccinations. For more information on travel health, visit or

Program Fee  

The program fee is $3,250 per person. Based on double occupancy, it includes twice-daily yoga sessions led by Jeffrey Bores, accommodations, all meals from dinner on Sept. 9 through breakfast on Sept. 16, admissions for group activities, ground transportation during the program, and some medical coverage while overseas. For single occupancy, add $500.

Airfare to and from Rome is not included. Participants are solely responsible for all expenses not specifically included in the program fee. Examples of excluded expenses are: Airfare between your home town and Rome • Airport transfers in your home town • Any passport fees • Any recommended immunizations or vaccinations • Baggage insurance • Trip cancellation insurance above $2,000 lifetime coverage • Laundry • Dry cleaning • Phone charges • Room service or other items of a personal nature • Expenses incurred during free time or non-group activities.

Making Your Travel Plans  

You should plan to arrive in Rome on Saturday, September 9 (most flights from the US are overnight, which means you should depart the US on Friday, September 8). Plan to depart from Rome in the late morning on Saturday, September 16, 2017 and arriving home the same day.

Flights will be available in airline systems about 11 months prior to departure; however, we recommend you not purchase non-refundable airfare until we can confirm the program has enough participants to go.
