{"id":477,"date":"2023-04-10T16:10:34","date_gmt":"2023-04-10T21:10:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/using-wordpress\/?page_id=477"},"modified":"2026-08-25T11:58:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T16:58:32","slug":"block-basics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/using-wordpress\/welcome-to-blocks\/block-basics\/","title":{"rendered":"Block Basics"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An introduction to the basics of adding blocks, adding and altering content, and where to manage options and settings for blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Everything is a Block<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Block Editor, which is where our content now lives, everything is now a block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, not every sentence, but every <em>paragraph<\/em> certainly is. A list is also a block, as well as an image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does that mean our old content has been deconstructed entirely into blocks? <strong>Not necessarily.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of our old content now lives inside a WYSIWYG block as a sort of <em>interim<\/em> state. In other words, if it was created inside a WYSIWYG panel, or somewhere <em>other<\/em> than a panel, it will now be in a WYSIWYG block, and that&#8217;s O.K.!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blocks are Content &#8220;Containers&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So really, they are just a different way of organizing your content on the page. But they&#8217;re also robust.
