All parties to a particular form of\u00a0<em>sexual contact<\/em> must provide consent, and such consent must be present throughout the activity.\u00a0Even when consent is given, it may be retracted at any time.<\/p>\n<p>A person can only provide consent when that person:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acts freely and voluntarily, without\u00a0<em>coercion or force<\/em>\u00a0or otherwise feeling unduly pressured, threatened, intimidated;<\/li>\n<li>Is informed about the nature of the\u00a0<em>sexual contact<\/em>\u00a0involved;<\/li>\n<li>Is not\u00a0<em>incapacitated<\/em>, whether from alcohol, other drugs, or other causes, such that they cannot understand the fact, nature, or extent of the\u00a0<em>sexual contact<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>Is conscious;<\/li>\n<li>Is of legal\u00a0<em><abbr title=\"The number of years a person has lived. Under the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act, employees who are 40 years old and older are legally protected from discrimination and harassment based upon their age. Those who are in mutually monogamous relationships are much less likely to contract an infection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What is your sexual history?<\/strong> You deserve to know. This includes any history of STIs, when they were last tested, how many sexual partners they have had, and anything else that seems important.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Are you willing to be tested?<\/strong> Someone who truly has your best interests at heart will say yes. Hesitation or refusal is a big red flag.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How do you feel about sex?<\/strong> The answer to this question will give you an idea of whether you are both on the same page when it comes to the emotional, physical, mental, and even spiritual sides of sexuality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How do you feel about contraceptives?<\/strong> Talking about which contraception methods are right for the two of you is always a sign of a healthy relationship. Some methods can also protect against infections. Anybody who has <span class=\"has-tip tooltipstered\" data-lang=\"en\" data-lookup=\"501\">oral<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"has-tip tooltipstered\" data-lang=\"en\" data-lookup=\"21\">anal<\/span>, or\u00a0<span class=\"has-tip tooltipstered\" data-lang=\"en\" data-lookup=\"770\">vaginal sex<\/span>, or genital skin-to-skin contact with another person can get STIs.<\/p>\n<p>There are lots of ways you can make sex safer. One of the best ways is by using a barrier \u2014 like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/birth-control\/condom\">condoms<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/birth-control\/internal-condom\">internal condoms<\/a>, and\/or\u00a0<span class=\"has-tip tooltipstered\" data-lang=\"en\" data-lookup=\"158\">dental dams<\/span>\u00a0\u2014 every single time you have\u00a0<span class=\"has-tip tooltipstered\" data-lang=\"en\" data-lookup=\"501\">oral<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"has-tip tooltipstered\" data-lang=\"en\" data-lookup=\"21\">anal<\/span>, or\u00a0<span class=\"has-tip tooltipstered\" data-lang=\"en\" data-lookup=\"770\">vaginal sex<\/span>.
