41590 | 11605 | 24805 | Teresa Heath | The Louis and Mary Kay Smith Endowment for the International and Off-Campus Studies Office | Over the years, Louis and Mary Kay Smith and St. Olaf College have come to know each other very well. Through several endowments to the College, the Smiths have demonstrated their passions for higher education, fine music, and global relations and understanding. These passions are a reflection of their own lives. Louis and Mary Kay each have multiple college degrees, with Louis pursuing engineering and Mary Kay studying French and other foreign languages. They were both raised with music being an important part of their lives, through the church organist work of Louis's mother and the many years of piano study for Mary Kay. Their love of experiencing foreign cultures began with a summer of foreign study and travel in France and other parts of Europe for Mary Kay. Four years later Louis began a two-year assignment with the U.S. Army in southwestern France. With their love for foreign travel and cultures now deeply engrained, they spent a further twelve years abroad while on assignments with Exxon in London, Norway, and Saudi Arabia. Finally, Louis made a great many business trips for negotiations with governments in more than thirty countries. Having experienced firsthand the value of higher education coupled with global experience, the Smiths want to provide an environment that will encourage others to have similar experiences. Toward that end, they are establishing this endowment that will fully fund the College's International and Off-Campus Studies office.

Withdrawals should provide support to (1) cross cultural sponsored off-campus study programs, (2) students who are following an academic program at St. Olaf leading to international service, and (3) faculty supporting either (1) or (2). This support will not be restricted by departments, but preference will be given to support students interested in international careers. 41924 | 11615 | 50363 | Teresa Heath | Stranghoener Family Endowed Fund for Global Semester | Larry and Lynn Stranghoener established an endowed fund for the benefit of students and faculty participating in the College's Global Semester program. International travel has long been a part of their personal, academic, and professional lives. They have had global experiences which have shaped their world view and who they are. Their children share this experience and enthusiasm and have all benefitted from extensive international travel and study experiences. By supporting the Global Semester the Stranghoeners intend to encourage development of a global perspective, foster learning about the world and other cultures, broaden horizons and enhance self-discovery, and give the joy and occasional frustration of living in close community with other students and professors over the course of a semester. Beyond that impact on students, they seek to revitalize a strategic and signature college program by largely eliminating cost as a barrier to participation.
41926 | 11615 | 50341 | Teresa Heath | Endowment for International Studies | Diana Edelmann Johnson '80 and Murray R. Johnson '85 established an endowed fund for the benefit of faculty and students at St. Olaf College that will sustain the ongoing development, innovation, and leadership which have long distinguished our international education programs. This endowed fund shall be named The Endowment for International Studies. This endowment will provide consistent, steady support that would continue to drive the new ideas and programs that substantially reinforce St. Olaf's profile as an international study leader and create relevant and provocative opportunities for our students. It will also provide our International and Off-Campus Study department the flexibility necessary to drive development and provide the broader St. Olaf community access to the outcomes of faculty research as well as thought leaders on international issues. Funds may also support other costs necessary to meet emerging international educational opportunities.
41929 | 11615 | 50481 | Teresa Heath | The Greg and Lisa Nave Buck Endowed Fund for the Jerusalem Semester SIM 2.0 | Lisa Nave '77 and Greg Buck '77 with 30 other classmates, participated in what was called the Mideast Semester the Fall and Interim of 1976-77. The fall semester was based out of Jerusalem. During the Interim they traveled from Istanbul, Turkey, through parts of Greece and Italy, ending in Rome. Per Greg and Lisa: "Our experience was so much more than just classes and tours. Warm friendships and regular partnerships allowed St. Olaf College to have an active student presence in Jerusalem with many semester groups participating in the program over the years since 1966. Living in Jerusalem provided the opportunity to study history, geography, religion and politics at the confluence of Judaism, Islam and Christianity. [...] The daily unfolding of religious life in the city is witnessed in abundance and offers so much more than just classroom study. This experience, like other international study programs, inevitably opens students' eyes and ears to global issues that affect us all. By removing the financial burden of traveling and living off campus, we hope more students can participate in this program. We hope it will change the way students view the world and how they participate in it [...]. Hopefully many St. Olaf students will study there for years to come, and return with expanded knowledge, new perspectives, and lifelong friendships."

We are creating the Fund as a way to honor Dr. Armstrong's 30 years as Director of the St. Olaf Choir, and to ensure that students with identified financial need feel the fiscal burdens of domestic tour less keenly by increasing the per diem for qualified students and by helping with the cost of catering to increase the quality of meals on the road. We learned that this was a need from our daughter, Margaret, who was a member of the St. Olaf Choir for three years. This is a need that we want to help with, as we strongly feel that the arts should be accessible to everyone. Dave noticed Kathy first, particularly her warmth and generosity. He eventually impressed her with a spiffy bowling move, as well as with his kind heart and science smarts. Dave was a biology and chemistry major, Kathy studies home economics. Dave spent a summer at St. Olaf doing a research project for the biology department, tagging birds on campus. Kathy and Dave married at Boe Chapel one week after graduation in 1962. Dave went on to study medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and practiced neuroradiology. Kathy taught home economics and managed the school district lunch program in Stoughton, WI. She then stayed at home with her children, Mark '88, Jennifer '90, and Jonathan '94, and volunteered countless hours at church, schools, and nonprofits. Kathy and Dave inherited a lifelong interest in learning from their parents, Arthur '27 and Elenora Larson and Pearly '28 and Mary Hegdal, which they shared with their children and grandchildren. St. Olaf College was close to Dave and Kathy's hearts--they wanted to leave a legacy that contributed to the future of liberal arts, research, and educational opportunities for St Olaf students.

With this gift, I hope to show him my thanks. My senior year at St. Olaf was George's first year teaching at St. Olaf. He had just gotten his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. In that first year, he taught a course on Molecular Spectroscopy, which I took and loved. That course convinced me that this was the area of chemistry that I wanted to pursue. After receiving my PhD at the University of Chicago, I did a postdoc at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and then another at Nagoya University in Japan. I then joined the Chemistry Department faculty at the University of Florida and remained in its Physical Chemistry division from 1968 to 2011, teaching General and Physical Chemistry and conducting research in Molecular Spectroscopy. I have had a very fulfilling career, both in teaching and research, and I owe a large measure of it to the start I got at St. Olaf, its Chemistry Department, and, most especially, to Dr. George Hardgrove.
