For those of you Studying Abroad or Studying Away during the Fall Term:

You will not be participating in our Returning Student Housing Selection process. Complete the Study Away College Program form on your SIS Housing Portal.

This application will go live on February 13!

Students studying away or graduating during January and Spring Terms:

Please complete the regular Housing Selection Process.

Residence Life will launch an informal housing process to handle housing bed types that are limited. The housing bed types included will be as follows:

• Octet	Ole Loop Community
• Duodectet	Ytterboe Hall
• General Triples	Hillboe Hall, Kittelsby Hall, Larson Hall, Mellby Hall and Thorson Hall
• Triple Suites	Rand Hall

These housing types are limited within the inventory. Also at the time of the Housing Selection Process initial communication, these housing types may no longer be available due to meeting housing accommodations when the Formal Housing Selection Process commences.

Residents may only participate in one of the housing types during the Informal Housing Placement Process.
During this process residents will not select within the housing portal their assignment but be placed by Residence Life based off of group priority numbers.
Residents who are not able to be placed will proceed to participate in the Formal Housing Selection Process as indicated below.

Students should log into their housing portal through SIS. They will go to the Applications tab to select the “2024-2025 Returning Student Housing Agreement,” to complete Housing Agreement and Roommate Questionnaire. Once you have completed this step, students will be able to move forward to Step 2: Roommate Selection

Step 2 – Roommate Linking

Students should log into their housing portal through SIS. They will go to the room selection tab and choose roommates/suitemates and assemble groups on desired housing types. You will be able to search for roommates by name or class year. Don’t wait to match – start talking to your friends/peers about next year and go to the housing portal and search for and request roommates. All roommate groups/pairs must be finalized in advance of the room selection event. If you do not have a fully-matched roommate group that matches the housing type you are wanting you will not be able to participate in that room selection process (ex. if you don’t have a group of 10 matched, you will not be invited to select a Ytterboe dectet pod).

Dectet Pod – if you want to live in an Ytterboe dectet pod(10 residents) you and your roommate group will need to be 10 people, meaning YOU will need to select 9 roommates even though you are all living in different rooms, it is ONE pod.
Sextet – if you want to live in a sextet you will select 5 roommates to complete your 6 person sextet. Even though you are living in different rooms you are living in one sextet.
Triple – If you want to live in a triple you will select two other roommates to live in the triple.

Make sure to check your roommate profile-it must be set to display my information to be searchable for roommate selection. Once your roommate group has been finalized, please select Do not Display me so you do not come up when students are searching.
In your housing portal you will see the names of people who selected to live with you. You need to accept those requests, and they will need to accept your request.
For each housing option, everyone will need to accept each other’s requests. For example, in an Ytterboe dectet pod, all 10 people need to request each other and accept each other. If one person doesn’t you won’t qualify for a pod.

- Now that you have your roommate group finalized, be realistic about where you want to live and in what room/suite types you have a good chance to live in.
  - Ex. Seniors are given priority…they may take all of the Ytterboe Dectet Pods.

Step 4: Class Registration & Readmittance

Current Students Registration

Students must register for Fall 2025 classes during the class registration period. For more information about class registration follow the link above.

*Students not enrolled in Fall 2025 classes by May 1, 2025 may be subject to being released from their housing assignment. Students will be reassigned housing once they have enrolled in Fall 2025 classes.

Readmittance

Students who are not currently enrolled at St. Olaf for the Spring Term and are returning/being readmitted to the college must have all paperwork submitted, completed and approved by March 1 to participate in Housing Selection.

Students who do not complete their readmittance paperwork by March 1 will be placed and receive a housing assignment after July 1.

Step 4: Selection time assignment

(check on the day before your room selection event)

Your group will be assigned a time that you will be able to select a room. The time will be posted to the housing portal on the day roommate selections were due for a specific room selection event. Dates and times of room draw events are dependent on group size (check the schedule below).
- Selection times are determined randomly based on seniority.
  - Seniors – first priority
  - Juniors – second priority
  - Sophomores – third priority
You must fill the entire room/suite with a fully mutually matched roommate group at this time. Groups who do not meet the required group number will not be invited to participate in that room selection event. Please make sure or double-check that Step 1 is fully complete for this step to go smoothly!
Groups are given Selection Times in 90-second intervals.

Step 5: Room selection events

Step 5 – Room Selection.

Your roommate group will be assigned a priority number as stated above the day before the room selection you would like to take part in. Your group should choose ONE person that is available and responsible to do the entire room selection for the group using the group number.
Once the room draw event has started you may log on and see what is still available but will not be able to select until your assigned time.
You will log onto the same portal through your SIS to go to the room selection site at your assigned time. At that time you will have one minute before the next group number enters the portal and selects. You have as long as you want, but only one minute before someone else can come in and start selecting.
- Dectet Pod Room Draw Event will give individuals 2 minutes to confirm the room due to the size of the roommate group.
The person that does the room selection for the group will be shown that their room selection was confirmed. After all room draw events end residents will be emailed their housing assignment.
Repeat the steps listed above (following the timeline listed below) if you do not receive your desired room.

Step 6: Class Registration & Readmittance

Roommate Linking will close at 8 AM on days with housing selection. Roommate groups must be completed by that time to participate in housing selection for that room type.

Roommate Linking will re-open for everyone at 7 pm.

Not all housing types indicated below participate in the formal housing selection process.

Rand is the only residence hall with triple suites

The Triple Suite draw requires three students. Each triple suite consists of double room and single room connected by a bathroom. At the time a triple suite is selected, the individual room assignment of each student must be indicated. Rooms designated as triple suites will be indicated on the Room Designation Charts. The beds in triple suites must stay in the designated rooms. There cannot be a room for all of the beds and a room as a living area. Important for students rooms with a vacancy: In the case of a vacancy in a room the remaining roommate(s) will be made aware of options for filling the vacancy.

Each quad suite consists of two double rooms connected by a bathroom. At the time a Quad Suite is selected, the individual room assignment of each student must be indicated. Rooms designated as quad suites will be indicated on the Room Designation Charts. The beds in Quad Suites must stay in the designated rooms. There cannot be a room for all of the beds and a room as a living area. Important for students rooms with a vacancy: In the case of a vacancy in a room the remaining roommate(s) will be made aware of options for filling the vacancy.

Requires 6 students of the same gender. Each Sextet consists of three doubles located next to each other on the same hallway. At the time a Sextet is selected, the individual room assignment of each student must be indicated. Rooms cannot be designated as “sleeping rooms” and “living rooms.” All rooms must keep their original number of beds and furniture in the rooms. Rooms designated as part of a Sextet will be indicated on the Room Designation Charts.

Ole Loop Community is the only residence building that requires 8 students.

Each Octet consists of three doubles with two singles. Rooms cannot be designated as “sleeping rooms” and “living rooms.” All rooms must keep their original number of beds and furniture in the rooms. Rooms designated as part of a Sextet will be indicated on the Room Designation Charts.

Selection numbers are based on the average of the entire group. The classification is based on your anticipated graduation year that place you in the category, not the number of years (or academic semesters) you have been at St. Olaf. Each academic class will fall within the following groupings:

Students studying abroad during Fall semester should not participate in Room Selection. Students abroad in the fall will follow a separate process when they return for January or Spring terms, and will be contacted at a later date about their plans. Please submit the College Program Form.

Occasionally, a student might require certain accommodations to ensure accessibility of on-campus housing, such a residence hall with an elevator; ground-level entry; or a room in close proximity to the bathroom.
