Jose Ramirez Gonzalez

Hello! I am Jose Gonzalez Ramirez. My pronouns are he/him, and I am a Mexican-American student from Northfield, Minnesota. It was not until my senior year of high school that my heart was set ablaze to try and diversify the STEM field and support students of color or first-generation college students looking to continue their education. While in high school, I was asked to collaborate with the Northfield Promise Equity team in providing a voice for the underrepresented in our student body and to think of strategies that would help lessen the achievement gap in Northfield’s subjects of reading and math. Through this collaboration, I learned so much about myself and how my experiences were not just due to my learning capabilities but also a result of being a student of color who did not have any role models in the classroom or in the professional work environment. Now, I aspire to be a leader in the STEM field as well as my community to provide mentorship for others that I was unable to obtain. Here at St. Olaf, I have a passion for helping others and I want to be able to work with fellow peers and faculty to improve inclusivity and equality for students of color, first-generation students, and all students considering pursuing a STEM path. As a member of the NSM Student Action Team, I would like to be a voice to help reach students who are struggling to find their path and support others in their walk as STEM Students.  Closing achievement gaps in St. Olaf is key to making this campus a more inclusive environment.
