Death Cafe

Students are welcome to attend Death Cafe hosted by the Interfaith Fellows from the Lutheran Center for Faith, Values, and Community. The Death Cafe will be held in Buntrock Commons 142 on Thursday May 9th from 4-5 pm.
The Death Café is a facilitated and student led discussion surrounding death and life. Some potential questions may include: What does it mean to have a good death? What barriers are there to talking about death? How is death approached in your community? Is it something feared, celebrated, ignored?, and How does death help us focus on what we want to achieve in our lives? The topics will range from philosophical ideas to practical questions. Our discussion will not center around religion but it is a welcome part of respectful and open-minded conversations that will take place.
Death Cafés first began in the UK in 2011 to normalize talking about death and discuss questions around mortality. The creator, Jon Underwood, was inspired by Bernard Crettaz who held Café Mortal events in France and Switzerland. Death Cafés now take place worldwide in libraries, coffee shops, and many other settings.
The Death Café is not designed to be a grief support group or to educate people about death but rather a place to ponder big questions that people hold. We recognize that talking about death can be sensitive so we encourage you to prepare for conversations that might be challenging. Talking about death can sometimes be intimidating and we want to create a safe and non judgmental environment to talk about it. Being more comfortable with talking about death allows us to explore thoughts and feelings related to death, dying, and what the true meaning of life is.
