Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of American ideals and the tensions among them, ideals such as freedom, equality, community, democracy, justice, responsibility, toleration, and authority.
- Knowledge of the socio-political history that shapes contemporary American public affairs, including history related to class, gender, and race.
- The ability to understand and evaluate competing normative perspectives about what ought to be done, and to apply those perspectives to contemporary policy debates.
- The ability to engage in respectful disagreement about matters of public interest, particularly those that are controversial or reflect moral, economic, political or religious complexity.
- The ability to write in clear, effective prose.
