We love our history department faculty and staff! Whether it’s your first class in the department or your ninth, St. Olaf history professors are always willing to discuss class readings, go over paper drafts, or anything else you need in office hours or over coffee at the Cage—and our Academic Administrative Assistant Kat Middeldorp can get you pre-registered for history classes and keep you up to date about department events.
This month, we’re featuring the amazing work of Dr. Timothy Howe, who is off in Alexandria, Egypt filming a documentary about the continuity of religious places from antiquity to the present. Here he is interviewing the Egyptian Coptic Pope, the leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church, and the head imam of the Prophet Daniel Mosque! The “seat” of the Pope, St. Savvas’s Monastery, is where Dr. Howe believes the royal tombs of the Ptolemies once stood. Dr. Howe and his colleagues have been allowed into the sealed tunnels beneath the mosque to film, which have been closed to the public for many years.

Meet all our incredible faculty and staff below, and check out some of the incredible work they’ve been doing inside and outside of St. Olaf!
