Laptop Checkout for Students

The Problem

Prior to the pandemic, students either owned a computer or relied upon the public computing labs scattered throughout campus. During the pandemic we recognized that immediate access to a computer or laptop was critical to student success. Going forward, we believe that all students need to have a laptop of their own for coursework, but many simply cannot afford to purchase a laptop of the caliber necessary to complete their assignments.

Goals

Provide a computer for every student who has either a long-term or short term need for a laptop to complete their coursework.

Actions Taken

IT will continue to loan laptops to students in need. We will have a pool of approximately 40 laptops, both Mac and Windows, available for both short-term and long-term checkout. Each student will be given assistance and technical support through the helpdesk. Financial Aid and the Dean of Students will help us determine the students most in need of this service. The IT website and TDX will have articles about the service and how to apply for both short-term and longer term checkout. TDX will also be used to track the request and communications with the student. As appropriate, we will let faculty know of the service so that they can inform those students that are in need of a laptop.

Accomplishments so Far

1. Since Spring 2020, we have provided 40 students with a laptop or desktop computer so that they could complete their Spring classes.

2.  A capital budget was secured for the 2021-22 academic year to enhance and continue the LITS check out program.

3. The framework for the program was developed in collaboration with the Dean of Students staff.
