Navigation and Welcome Signs

The Problem

Rolvaag Library and the Halvorson Music Library can be intimidating places for new visitors (students, staff, and faculty). Rolvaag Library is a particularly difficult space to navigate because of its highly complex layout. Navigating a building should not add to the stress of being a first time visitor or visitor from another culture, a first-generation student, an individual with a hardware/software failure, or those with an upcoming research project.

Goals

LITS is working to create a welcoming and positive environment for all students, staff, faculty, and visitors, where one can easily and independently negotiate the library, and also find a helpful staff member to help guide them.

Actions Taken

1. Through the space audit identify areas that could benefit from better signage to help students, faculty and staff navigate the library.

2. Create a welcome sign to welcome all students, faculty and staff to the library.

Accomplishments so Far

We developed new signage for the library entrance that states our space strives to be diverse, inclusive, and a welcoming space.
