Hofrenning pens piece for Star Tribune, talks with TPT
Just a week after returning from New Hampshire, where he led 20 St. Olaf College students in a hands-on course on presidential politics, Professor of Political Science Dan Hofrenning penned a commentary for the Star Tribune and appeared on TPT’s Almanac program with two of his students.
In the Star Tribune commentary, Hofrenning argues that “the strength of candidates receiving most of their money in small contributions shows that big money is not invincible.”
What it does show, he says, is that “Candidates, campaigns — and voters — still matter.”
On Almanac, Hofrenning and students William Seabrook ’16 and Gabrielle Simeck ’18 talked about seeing the impact of campaigns — and the importance of voters — firsthand during an Interim course that took them to New Hampshire in the weeks leading up to the nation’s first primary election.
Students in the course served as interns on the various presidential campaigns and blogged about their experience for the Star Tribune.
“I think the campaign is much more intense than you see on TV,” Simeck tells TPT hosts Cathy Wurzer and Eric Eskola. “There’s much more interaction with the average voter.”
