St. Olaf College’s 12th president is Susan Rundell Singer, an experienced leader in higher education who has led national efforts to advance undergraduate teaching and learning.

As St. Olaf College President Susan Rundell Singer began her first day of work on campus on June 5, her first order of business was to start making connections with faculty, staff, and students.

She shared a welcome message with all members of the campus community, and then hosted a meet-and-greet with donuts and coffee in Tomson Hall that attracted hundreds of attendees.

“What an exhilarating new beginning. After months of anticipation, I am part of the remarkable St. Olaf community. I am grateful for the warm welcome and the excitement for what we will accomplish together as we write the next chapter of St. Olaf’s rich history,” Rundell Singer wrote in her welcome message. “Today my real learning begins — the engaged learning that marks a St. Olaf education. Summer is the perfect time to get to know our staff across campus and faculty whose scholarly pursuits are not taking them far from Northfield.”

In addition to meeting members of the campus community in person, Rundell Singer also invited Oles near and far to follow along as she shared moments from her first day on the St. Olaf Instagram account. Throughout the day she answered questions from followers, which ranged from what drew her to this role at St. Olaf to what her favorite type of music is to whether she plans to bike to work.

“In my last two positions, I bike commuted every day,” she shared. “I’ve got to do some hill training before I can pull that off at St. Olaf!”

And even though most St. Olaf students just left for summer break, Rundell Singer noted that one of the things she’s most looking forward to is welcoming students and their families to campus this fall.

“So many things drew me to St. Olaf,” she shared. “First and foremost is the students. Students are our future, and St. Olaf students are genuine, they work hard, they’re bright, and they’re really committed to each other and making the world a better place.”
