St. Olaf Orchestra’s East Coast tour includes performance at Carnegie Hall

The St. Olaf Orchestra, conducted by Steven Amundson, is embarking on its 2019 national tour later this month, which will feature performances along the East Coast — including the ensemble’s debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Called “one of the best college orchestras in the nation” by Time magazine’s Richard Ostling, the St. Olaf Orchestra is known for its passionate and professional performances. The February 2 Carnegie Hall performance will feature a collaboration with world-renowned violinist Sarah Chang. The program for the tour, which runs from January 26 to February 5, features Barber’s Overture to the School for Scandal, Missy Mazzoli’s These Worlds in Us, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and more.

“Touring with the St. Olaf Orchestra is a great and long tradition,” says Amundson. “It gives the students and me a chance to experience a progressively deeper and richer musical experience each day of our journey. The orchestra understands that some of the most valuable qualities of a fantastic performance are found not only in a high level of excellence, but also in seeking a transformative musical experience.”

The St. Olaf Orchestra was named the winner of the 2013 American Prize for Orchestra Performance among colleges and universities. In addition to performances across the United States, the orchestra has been broadcast on PBS and public radio stations nationwide as part of the acclaimed St. Olaf Christmas Festival. The St. Olaf Orchestra has also toured internationally in Norway, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Switzerland, Spain, China, Uruguay, and Argentina. They will return to Norway this summer on a joint tour with the St. Olaf Choir.
