May 12 meeting summary
Last night in Buntrock Commons we continued the listening and input phase of our process, spending four and a half hours hearing and learning from students who have experienced the Title IX process and those who are doing tremendous work to support our community. In addition to meeting with five individuals, we met with representatives of the Sexual Assault Resource Network, It’s On Us, GLOW, and College Ministry. The Working Group was inspired by their candor and desire to make St. Olaf a stronger, safer place for all.
We recognize that the Title IX process involves multiple parties, and last night we heard important and relevant experiences from both complainants and respondents. Our shared goal remains ensuring that St. Olaf has a fair and equitable process for all parties.
While this has been a listening and input phase, there are themes rising to the surface in our conversations, including the need for more support for college resources, more education, and more communication.
Next week, Leslie Gomez and Gina Smith from the Pepper Hamilton law firm, who have been retained by the Working Group, will be on campus to meet with the Working Group, members of the Title IX team, and the Dean of Students Office. We will also hear from other sources of student support and advocacy, including counseling resources through Boe House and the HOPE (Healing Outreach Prevention Education) Center in nearby Faribault.
We continue to be motivated by the many students who are working hard to support their friends and peers to make St. Olaf a better place. We strive to do the same in our work.
