June 17 meeting summary
On Friday the Working Group met for a full-day session to report on the work that subgroups have been doing. We had a rich discussion and respectful, productive debate about our recommendations in the following areas:
- Title IX team structure and training
- Definitions provided in policy, including consent, incapacitation, stalking, etc.
- Reporting process, complaint resolution, and sanctions
- Ongoing policy and process assessment, and accountability
- Inclusivity and accessibility
- Support services, including the Sexual Assault Resource Network (SARN)
- Training for students and faculty/staff
Leslie Gomez and Gina Smith from Pepper Hamilton joined the Working Group and gave an overview of recent Office for Civil Rights resolutions as well as their own recommendations for improving St. Olaf’s policies.
Consensus was reached on many of the topics we covered, and our subgroups will continue to discuss areas where additional research and dialogue are needed.
Members of the Title IX Working Group have devoted significant time and energy throughout this process and outside of our full group meetings. I am appreciative of their expertise and their authentic, compassionate commitment to the important work we are doing on behalf of St. Olaf.
Our next step is to draft and finalize our recommendations at our upcoming full-day session on July 11. We remain on schedule to release our recommendations to President Anderson and the St. Olaf community on July 15.
