Hey! My name is Jonathan Briones Torres (he/him), and I am a Mexican-American student from  Minneapolis, MN. Before coming to St. Olaf, I was part of a leadership group in my high school that helped with community outreach. During that role, I was able to connect with other Latine students from my community, allowing me to utilize my Spanish and experiences to assist them in any way I could. Throughout my life I have noticed a lack of diverse voices in the STEM, and that has even impacted some of my undergrad experience. These past few years have motivated me to try to help increase diversity in any way I can in those fields. I hope my position in the NSM Student Action Team allows me to utilize my past leadership experiences to provide opportunities and mentorship for other underrepresented students. I am passionate about trying to minimize the disparities in STEM for other diverse students who are also pursuing a degree in the sciences. Although there may be a long way to go, I hope that my role plants the seeds in allowing the community to grow within STEM.
