[Faculty Handbook Category #3]
The Faculty Athletic Representative shall be elected by the faculty from among nominees who hold faculty status but are not members of the physical education department or the athletic staff. The term of office shall be six years.
The Faculty Athletic Representative assists the President as an adviser on athletic matters, certifies the academic eligibility of athletes, and serves as an ex-officio member of the Student Life Committee. The Faculty Athletic Representative is automatically a member of the governing board of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). This Board, whose voting membership is composed solely of the Faculty Athletic Representatives from the member schools, has final responsibility for policies concerning the conduct of intercollegiate athletics among the member schools. It holds regular meetings twice a year, plus special meetings as required. It acts on such matters as requests for membership in the MIAC and changes in the Manual for the Conduct of Sports (the official manual of rules and regulations governing the conduct of sports within the conference), oversees the general area of financial aid to athletes, and has the power to impose sanctions.
