[Faculty Handbook Category #1]
Overview
This Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) policy applies to anyone – undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and other senior personnel – involved in federally-funded research. RCR training includes not only a responsibility to generate and disseminate knowledge with rigor and integrity, but also commitments to:
- Conduct peer review with the highest ethical standards;
- Diligently protect proprietary information and intellectual property from inappropriate disclosure; and
- Treat students and colleagues fairly and with respect.
Who Must Receive Training
Faculty, students, postdocs, staff, other senior personnel research federal research support must complete RCR training. Principal investigators (PIs) supported by federal grants or contracts must identify and comply with funding agency requirements related to RCR, as funder requirements may vary.
Researcher Responsibilities
PIs will work together with the Grants Accountant (and in completing hiring requisitions for students) to identify those individuals working on their sponsored projects who must receive RCR training and to determine the appropriate training to meet funder requirements.
Training Requirements
Training requirements and the format of this training will vary by funder. Please see the St. Olaf Government, Foundation and Corporate Relations Office for specific details.
Frequency of Training
RCR training should be completed no less than once every four years.
Monitoring Completion of RCR Training
Verification of RCR training includes completion certification through online training (CITI) and, if necessary, individual course completion records. Completion of the RCR training will be monitored by the following: CURI will monitor training completion for CURI students, Grants Accounting will monitor training completion for all non-CURI students and faculty and staff receiving grant funding for research.
