Instructional Resources/Materials Content Accessibility Audits
Chair/Lead: Kirk Martinson
Members: Audrey Gunn, Ben Gottfried, Rebecca Machado
The Problem
Instructors are not well-informed about accessibility barriers in their instructional content, and, if they are informed, they may be unaware of the ways they can remove such barriers while keeping their curriculum intact.
Goals
We will partner with CILA, CAAS, Writing Center, and Accessibility Services to implement a service for providing accessibility audits of course content and materials to help faculty review and resolve issues relating to the accessibility.
Actions Taken
1. Drawing on work that was initiated during the 2019 Summer Sprints: Developing Content for Equity and Accessibility, the LITS Instruction Team, in collaboration with CILA, CAAS, the Writing Center, and Accessibility Services will offer a new service to review instructional materials and resources for accessibility. Materials reviewed may include course content created in a variety of formats (paper, Google Suite products, Microsoft Office products, PDF documents, videos, websites, and Moodle/Google Classroom original content, etc.).
2. As possible and as needed, we will purchase additional software tools to aid in the process.
3. To model good accessibility practice and pilot the review process, the LITS Instruction Team will audit their own instructional content, by the end of the 2022 academic year.
Accomplishments so Far
IT recently licensed the Grackle suite of accessibility tools, to help to educate faculty on accessibility issues and promote a self-service model of accessibility auditing.
