The Business and Management Studies Concentration is a multi-disciplinary program that can be earned alongside any academic major. It consists of three main components:
Five-course program of study:
- Three core courses: BUS 110: Fundamentals of Business, BUS 225: Principles of Accounting, and BUS 251: Principles of Management
- Two electives: One additional business management studies course and an approved course from another department or study abroad program
- Minimum grade of C required for all courses
- Courses cannot be taken S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory)
- Students must declare the concentration in SIS
Emphasis Requirements (Economics/Quantitative Economics majors)
Economics and Quantitative Economics majors can expand their business knowledge and experience by pursuing one of the following areas of emphasis:
Management: investigating business management principles
Finance: focusing on financial analysis and markets

Both emphases require:
- Five courses beyond the economics major
- Inclusion of a Level III Business & Management Studies course
- Minimum grade of C in each course
- Courses cannot be taken S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory)

Finance Fast-Track
Finance Fast-Track
For economics majors
The finance field can be difficult to break into as an undergraduate. Finance employers are increasingly engaging with students in their sophomore year. Many major finance firms are hiring (applications and interviews) for post-junior year summer internships beginning in the spring semester of the sophomore year. The Finance Fast-Track program (FFT) offers an accelerated curriculum for students interested in pursuing competitive finance careers. Incoming and current students are eligible to apply for the opportunity until the end of their first semester at St. Olaf.

Career Preparation
- Designed to make students competitive for sophomore-year finance recruitment
- Prepares students for post-junior year summer internships, often hired in spring of sophomore year
- Provides essential knowledge and skills for success in finance

Program Structure
- Accelerated economics and finance courses in the first two years
- Recommended economics major with finance emphasis
- Academic advising and coaching through the Piper Center for Vocation and Career
