St Olaf Band At Carnegie Hall

St. Olaf Festival of Bands

The St. Olaf Festival of Bands, scheduled for November 9, 2024, always promises to be a stimulating day for students and teachers alike. An exciting and intense day of rehearsals will culminate with performances by the Festival Band, the St. Olaf Band, and the Norseman Band. The St. Olaf Festival of Bands has enjoyed a long, successful history of bringing together outstanding high school musicians to prepare and share a program with nationally-acclaimed artists.

We are excited to announce that guest clinician Dr. Travis J. Cross will lead the Festival Band this year, bringing his exceptional expertise to both students and directors. As a professor of music and director of bands at UCLA, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and leads the graduate wind conducting program, Dr. Cross is a distinguished leader in the field. His participation promises to be an inspiring and invaluable experience for all involved. We will also be joined by Dr. Michael Buck, conductor of the Norseman Band. Dr. Buck is a 1989 graduate of St. Olaf College and the former director of bands at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. We are thrilled about the ongoing impact he is making on music-making at St. Olaf and the Festival of Bands.

There will be one Festival Band made up of students selected from the nearly 400 nominees. We invite you to nominate up to five students from your program, ranked in order of excellence. You may submit nominations online here through October 3. We appreciate your cooperation with ensuring that your students can definitely attend the event if selected to participate. Email bandfestival@stolaf.edu if you have any questions.

We look forward to seeing you at St. Olaf College.

— Dr. Henry L. Dorn

At St. Olaf, music sings and plays its way into our lives every day. It’s not just music majors who participate in our ensembles, it’s one third of the entire student body. Click here for more information about music at St. Olaf!
