Staying Cool in the Heat
Staying Cool in the Heat
Summer seems like the perfect time to be out in the Natural Lands. The prairie is bursting with vibrant yellows and purples, Heath Creek is babbling, and the forests are teeming with birds and other wildlife. While that may be true for most days, when the temperature climbs towards the triple digits and humidity is high, it can be dangerous to spend extended periods in the heat. Days of extreme heat can become increasingly common due to the effects of the climate crisis, so it is vital that we all know how to keep cool. Here are some tips to help keep yourself safe and comfortable on those hot summer days.
- Drink plenty of fluids (even if you’re not feeling thirsty)! It can be easy to become dehydrated in conditions with high temperatures and humidity, especially if you are also partaking in physically strenuous activities. One of the first warning signs of dehydration is feeling thirsty, so make sure to bring water with you as you explore the Natural Lands.
- Spend time in the shade! While it can certainly still be warm under the cover of a forest canopy, avoiding direct sunlight can help keep you cool
- If you are working or exercising outdoors, take frequent breaks! It’s easy to get overheated on hot days while also performing strenuous activities.
- Take a cool shower when you get back from outdoor adventures!
- Wear lightweight and loose clothing, along with making sure to apply sunscreen!
- Pace yourself!
- Know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses including but not limited to:
- Dizziness
- Disorientation and confusion
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid pulse
While we always want the Northfield community to be able to enjoy the Natural Lands, we also recognize that there are days when it is simply not safe to do so due to the heat. Please use your own discretion and stay safe outdoors! Learn more about staying safe in the heat here.
