Description: The German territory of the Saarland and its capital city of Saarbrücken have a long and troubled history. The territory was originally a principality of the Holy Roman Empire before becoming first part of the Kingdom of Prussia and then the German Empire. After both World Wars, the Saarland was separated from Germany and became an independent state under French protection. Since 1957, the Saarland has been part of Germany. FC Saarbrücken celebrates this history with their fan club "Virage Est Saarbrücken", or "East End Saarbrücken" in French, despite the city's German majority. Note the flags of France, the independent Saarland, and the European Union that are flown in the fan section. Taken at the Ludwigparkstadion, Saarbrücken, Germany
