- After committing to a Smith Center approved program, a credit registration placeholder is placed on the student’s account in DegreePath.
**This is ONLY a placeholder and does not guarantee receipt of indicated credit amount. Actual amount of credit received is dependent upon course enrollment, credit translation, and credits successfully completed.- Fall or Spring Semester Only: 4.0 St. Olaf credits
- Fall + January Term or Spring + January Term: 5.0 St. Olaf credits total (4.0 for semester and 1.0 for January Term)
- January Term: 1.0 St. Olaf credit
- Year: 9.0 St. Olaf Credits (4.0 fall, 1.0 January Term, and 4.0 spring)
- An official transcript will be sent from the program provider or university directly to the Smith Center (in most cases) with all of the student’s courses/credits and grades listed. It can take anywhere from 1-3 months (sometimes longer) for the Smith Center to receive the transcript from our partner.
- Once the official transcript is received, the Smith Center translates course load credits and grades (using the credit/grade translation tool), and attributes pre-approved OLE Core/GEs to courses taken.
- Students are then notified by the Smith Center that their transcript has been received. Courses, credit amounts, grades received, and OLE Core/GE attributes fulfilled are noted.
- The Smith Center then notifies the Registrar’s Office for official entry into the student’s record. The course title as displayed on the host program/university transcript, amount of credit, and grades*† received will then be displayed in the student’s SIS degree audit and will be included on the St. Olaf official transcript. The program/university name or location will also be included.
* The grade will be as issued by the program/university or as converted by the Smith Center. Only courses receiving a D- or higher, P, or S will receive credit. Courses receiving an F are deemed failed. All attempted coursework must be included in the St. Olaf record — this includes Fs, Us, Ns, and Ws.
†While only courses taught by St. Olaf faculty are factored into the St. Olaf GPA, please be aware that it is to your advantage to strive for the best grades you can get. Graduate schools, law schools, medical schools, and some employers may ask you to submit study abroad/away transcripts and may recalculate your GPA to include previously excluded coursework.
Grade Appeals
The St. Olaf grade appeal process does not apply for non-St. Olaf-led study abroad/away programs/universities. Students wishing to appeal a grade earned through a non-St. Olaf-led study abroad/away program may follow any available appeal process at the host program/institution. Students may follow the normal St. Olaf grade appeal process for courses taught by St. Olaf professors (ie. St. Olaf January Term programs, Global Semester, ESANZ).
Students wishing to appeal a grade earned through one of St. Olaf’s partner programs/universities should work with the Smith Center to initiate the appeal with their study abroad/away program/university.
