World Languages Center

The World Languages Center (WLC) serves the following language departments: Asian Studies, Classics, French, German, Norwegian, Russian, and Spanish.  We also provide learning resources for the following languages: Arabic, Czech, Danish, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Polish, Serbian, Swahili, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese, etc.

The WLC offers a variety of facilities. Our “hybrid” Computer Lab serves as an interactive room with 17 desktop computers and headsets as well as additional 15 rearrangeable work stations.  Here students can learn foreign languages in an individual and/or group setting. The WLC Viewing Lounge offers students the possibility to check out and watch foreign language-specific materials, work on iPads or laptops. Three Group Study Rooms are equipped with 16 laptops for independent and group work.  The WLC also offers iPads that are equipped with selected apps for foreign language learning. Five tutorial rooms and an exam room are available to students who seek help outside the classroom for their foreign language needs. The WLC houses tutoring sessions in Chinese, German, Japanese, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish, and  Italian and Danish.

As of Fall 2017 we have added an Audio / Video Editing/ Recording Station available for individual or small group projects. The station is equipped with following software: Audacity, Camtasia, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Movie Pro.  Our production studio provides help with any audio/video projects in or outside of the classroom. In the academic year 2017 – 2018 the WLC will continue coordinating the Independent Guided Language Enrichment Program (IGLE). This program offers a 10 week non-credit tutorial program in Danish and Italian. For more information contact the WLC Director at mcwr@stolaf.edu or igle@stolaf.edu.
