Ability Level

The St. Olaf community respects, values, and celebrates people of all abilities. When in the classroom or working in the community, students may meet people of varying levels of ability (physical, cognitive, development, emotional, etc.), and students will need to understand their own ability level and the ability level of others as they work cooperatively to achieve a civic goal.

How do you identify with respect to your physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities?

What are some skills and assets that you bring to the ACE project based on your own abilities?

Are there tasks that you would like to take on during your ACE project that you haven’t tried before to stretch and expand your abilities?

Where might you need some more support in the ACE project, particularly if you identity as differently abled, neurodiverse, etc.? What accommodations do you need to request to successfully engage with your community partner?

Group work:

Which roles could you see yourself taking based on your own abilities if participating in a group project?
What helps you focus on group goals based on your abilities, and how can you share these with group members?

How do differing abilities factor into how you define community and how you practice building community with others?

How can the ACE course advance your understanding of people of all abilities whom you’ll be engaging with in the future?

How is (or could) the ACE project be universally designed to be inclusive of differing abilities for your classmates and community members whom you’ll be engaging with?

If you are engaging with others who are differently abled, what preparation work might you need to do in order to meet them where they are at? What adaptations might you need to make in order to effectively engage with and build relationships with others who are differently abled?
