Project Description
Professors Kuxhausen and Robinson were given access to the Mosfilm archives to research and acquire primary source materials for a proposed online exhibition of Russian film. Mosfilm is the largest film production company in Russia, and has played a key role in the history of Russian film. Its output included many of the most widely-acclaimed Soviet era films.
Both Anna and Marc traveled separately to Moscow in the summer of 2014 to pursue this research. Because of realities on the ground–bureaucratic challenges, availability of key archivists, and an emerging picture of what materials might actually be accessible–the scope and focus of the project evolved. Ultimately they chose to focus on production materials related to The Courier (КУРЬЕР) and Ivan the Terrible (ИВАН ГРОЗНЫЙ). They were able to photograph many scripts and documents and add 350 images to their collection.
They also learned, through conversations with MosFilm’s archivist and staff, what types of documents have been preserved on-site and which categories of document have been sent to various Russian State Archives. This should make future visits to MosFilm’s archive easier and more predictable.
